My puppy keeps scratching her owie from her harnass

My poor chihuahua female puppy has soreness on her armpit from her harness. I switched to just a neck collar to take her outside to go potty, but she keeps scratching and I'm too poor to take her to the vet. Does anybody have any suggestions what I should do?

I doubt she needs the vet for a wittle boo boo, however you shouldn't even have a ratpuppy if you're too poor to take her to the vet.

I'm sure she'll be fine unless the wound starts to look infected or oozy. Keep her feet clean and nails trimmed if she insists on scratching. You could try to make a small cone to put around her neck or try band aid second skin type of stuff.

Also, start saving some money for future vet visits. Its really not that expensive and if you love your animals you will see to it that you are able to provide proper care in the future.

Do this, OP. A cone will give it time to heal. Probably easy to craft one with everyday items.

  • I was a victim of domestic violence and I managed to escape with my dog, and THIS is a big reason why money is an issue. so judge me for being battered if you can feel good with yourself about that.

    • I really didn't want to get into that aspect of it. I'm lucky to be healthy and not abused anymore now. However, I just want some ideas of what others have done in similar situations. This doesn't need to become a dispute about domestic violence. However, a vet is going to be about $600 which I don't have. Please don't judge me for being poor.

Don't get all pissy with the people who tell you you shouldn't have a dog if you can't afford to care for one, because we are right, the dog deserves proper care. Nobody's looking down on you for being financially challenged, everyone is financially challenged to some degree. Unfortunately though, love isn't enough for a dog. They need to be able to be provided for properly, just like a child.

By the way, shots are to be given every single year. Are you taking her to the vet every year for her shots like you're supposed to? I doubt it if you can't even afford a routine visit. Don't take your financial burdens out on an innocent animal, you have no right. Find someone who can properly care for her or get a better job and take her to the vet!

The shots thing could differ in terms of length of time. Even the ones you're supposed to give annually are up for debate when it comes to time, because they've found many illnesses related to annual vaccinations.
Course, everything causes cancer and tumors, so nobody is safe. lol.

I agree with the first half completely.

  • Don't be ragging on me bcuz of my financial situation. Things happen and the economy sux. She's not exactly a puppy, she's 3 1/2 but I've had her since she was 3 weeks old and she'll always be my puppy. I DO have a cone but I don't use it bcuz I thought It'd be better for her to lick it rather than scratch it. Licking her wounds heal them but it's the scratching that's bad. I just want some advice from people that did it on their own I guess.

You need to figure out how long these shots lasted and get her shots again. She could very well already be sick and you wouldn't know it. You can look up cheap vets for this. Getting both of my cats fixed and rabies shots cost me about $80. You can do what you need to if you look in the right spots and ask for help.

Cone is still better than no cone. It needs time to heal, the more it's disturbed the longer it will take generally.

      • With the cone she can't lick but she can still scratch.

Ah, crap. Is there some way you could bandage it? I'm not sure what you should do now.

I agree, you shouldn't have a pet who relies on you for everything if you are not financially able to take her to the vet. What if something serious happens to her? You FIND money or give her to a family who can care for her properly.

Have you even taken her to have her shots? Puppies need 3 sets of shots before they're actually safe from contracting a doggy disease. Please, don't get pets if you can't afford them. Its not fair on them.
