My shirt smells metallic or like iron

I'm wearing a large 4xl black, cotton shirt. It's I prefer to wear large shirts because it helps me to keep cool, and I hate sweating. I'm totally a person that's sensitive to smell, so I'm obsessed with smelling good.

The shirt I'm wearing is way too big for me, but that's how I like it. Anyway, I have a problem with a metallic like, smell on the shirt. I wash it many times in the washer, with laundry powder and it still smells. I sometimes use fabric softener but the smell never goes away.

It's worse when I hang it out on clothes line outside, in the sun and once it dries, it gives off a very, very strong metallic smell. I'm not put off by it, but I'm just wondering why it happens. It even happens in the dryer. I guess I have to dry the Shirt where the sun doesn't shine, or avoid putting it in the dryer.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Have you tried hand washing it? I do all my laundry by hand, the washing machine itself might be the problem

    • I think that might be the issue. I will try hand washing it to see if it makes any difference.

One of my cousins had that problem and it turned out to be mold in several parts of the machines. She cleaned it out with diluted bleach and the problem went away. I'm not sure if that's the case with your machines, but it reminded me of that.

I’m glad to see that a few people brought up mouldy washing machines.
That is a big problem. Unfortunately you have to get a professional washing machine repair guy to pull it apart and clean it properly.
If that IS the problem, dry your clothes on high heat in the dryer to kill the mould until you can afford to pay a professional to take it apart.
I have the same problem with the front loading washers in my building so I have to drag my laundry to a good laundromat.....very annoying!

Something like that happened to me with a pair of pants. I think I gave them away. Is the smell really bothersome,or is it something you can live with? But,I hope you can work it out.

It’s the smell of being produced in a Chinese factory and then stored in a plastic shipping bag for months.
