My teacher told me not to do homework

Ive always been terrible with math and hardly passed each year. Taking geometry and I do my best but I always fail and I even stayed after school many times with the teacher. At one point he just takes me aside and says seriously, you just don't get math and will probably never use any of it after high school so hes going to pass me because he can tell Im really trying but don't bother doing any homework because Im not getting any of it right and its doing more harm than good.

You are living in a dream world if you think you won't need math in life. Just counting your change after a purchase, or figuring out which product is a better value; that's all math. Want to buy a car? How are you going to be able tell if you can afford the payments and what the interest is, without math. MPG on your car, taxes on your home, miles driven or length of your commute to work. It's ALL math. No, you NEED math and therefor you NEED to get over your problem with math. Never mind what that stupid teacher said; YOU NEED TO LEARN MATH.

That's all arithmetic, maybe some basic pre-algebra concepts. OP probably won't need the level of math in the class he is taking. Plus I'm a liberal arts major and the math class I need to graduate is all super basic stuff; it's not even remedial math or anything, just what most people who aren't going to be teachers or engineers are gonna take. Also, most people don't even retain what they learned in their high school geometry class because they almost never have to use it.

I honestly believe that when you are my age, you'll look back surprised at how much algebra, geometry and even trig you used. I hear your argument all the time and completely discounting my profession, I've still used a great deal more math than even I would have expected. Just the little things like figuring the mpg for gas or the cost per day/month/year of something.
What's the harm in learning something you'll never use against the problem of being unable, one day, to figure out a problem because you have absolutely no idea of how to?

    • I can do basic math, I think he meant I wont need geometry and algebra and the advanced types.

Homework does everyone more harm than good, I can't believe schools are still bothering with that shit.

Maths can be difficult for some people, I don't understand it at all but I do force myself to practice basic maths skills because it is good stuff to know, even if you don't use it in your job.

As far as your teacher goes, I think he's doing the right thing.

Make sure you take English at least. You'll need to know the phrase "Do you want fries with that?"

I know the phrase "Do you need something for pain" because I work with people who are Palliative.

        Thanks Asshole.

Report the teacher and get a tutor.

    1) You probably will use it

    2) Even if you don't, math builds on itself and future teachers and college professors won't just pass you. If you don't get a grasp on the concepts in this class you will fail all future math courses and it will take much more work to get caught up.

Report the teacher as they are causing great harm to their students by supporting this idea.

    • I wonder, does he really think Im that dumb or is he just being lazy...

I'd venture to say he is being lazy and trying to cover for being a bad teacher. A failing student reflects poorly on the teacher if they are doing well in other classes and trying hard. I'm sure you could do well if you got the proper attention.

I'm terrible at math as well. That doesn't mean it isn't useful. You need to talk to your parents or even the school board. Its this teacher's job to make sure you learn this! He doesn't get to give up on a student just because its easier or because teaching you is too hard.

That's not right! Report him and ask your parents for a tutor. His words are saying that you'll never amount to anything. If you go to college, unless you're going for the creative arts, you'll more than likely have to use math. Many fields require math.

I'd report him as he isn't being professional BUT hey, if he'll pass you...

I was crap at Math in High School but now I'm pretty damn good at it. I seriously had a C or D in nearly all of my Math classes but when I went to my University, I did even more advanced Math and got straight A's and I LOVE it. It's so much fun now and before I made fun of it.
