Natural disasters

I just woke up this morning to see the news about an earthquake in Chile and tsunami warnings on the US West coast and Hawaii.

A few years ago we had a hurricane hit our coast that caused some damage but nothing catastrophic, mostly just an inconvenience and it was forgotten about.

Is it normal that if the natural disaster doesn't directly effect me I don't really give a shit, and actually look for photos of shit getting all fucked up? (My butt smells) I mean nobody really cares about anything unless it directly effects them anyway. It sucks that plane went down, but since it was in Malaysia and I don't know anyone I forgot about it by dinner time.

Unfortunately, this is far too common and has been a human trait for 1000s of years.

Not saying it's a bad thing, you have your own life and problems to deal with, but it's sad that people watching about the atrocities being committed in the world forget about it when Keeping up with the Kardashians comes on.

It's just our species. If we got torn up about every little thing we'd be way too strung out to accomplish anything. If I see someone in trouble in front of me I'm going to want to help but if someone half the world away is getting pulled away in a tide I can't do anything.

Yes you can, maybe not about that particular person, but you can support organisations which help people in disasters & wars: eg Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children and so on and on.

I got tired of crying over that little drowned boy a couple of weeks ago and then about all the other people displaced by wars not of their making, so I'm organising a benefit concert locally for the above two organisations.

Getting "torn up" about the plight of other people is only the first step: empathy is one of the qualities that makes us human but you then have to act on it, even if it's only in a very small way.

Nothing directly effects me. I feel the effects of things that directly affect me.

    • Natural disasters have an effect on the environment, that's the point. Not a grammar lesson

Sensible words from Short4words for once. Most of us are engineered to feel empathy for our fellow brothers and sisters.Multiply that times 7.1 billion and even the strongest mind (mine) will crack.

As I said above, act on the empathy! I promise it will stop your mind from cracking and every tiny bit of support does make a difference. Not acting on that empathy is to deny your common humanity with the rest of the human family

To quote Margaret Mead, the anthropologist and writer:
"Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can change the world for the better: in fact it's the only thing that ever has."
