Natural resources student. does this mean you're a hippy?

So I'm in college. It is hard sometimes, sometimes not, but most of the time I'm not the girl getting A's and a "scary B" on her transcript. So I feel shitty about that but other times I'm happy and excited about my education and what the values my specilization focuses on. I'm not a hippy, I'm not some vegan/organic only/save the world from gas run cars girl, I'm just a chick that loves the outdoors. I ski, backpack, rock climb and surf- I've watched the mountains and oceans change physically over time and I am interested in weather, climate change and human impact sooooo I decided to study it and have a goal of working with big recreation businesses to move them towards a more sustainable future. So I'm studying Natural Resources and business.

K, so now time to vent.

I am so fucking tired of all the people who say things like "good luck with getting a job" and "wow, that business minor is gonna save your tush" or how about "wow there are jobs for being a naturalists? how will you pay for things?". Just tonight my boyfriend was talking about his microbio classes and viruses to my dad at the dinner table- the entire time I was replaying the same lectures in my head I had to take, it was basic stuff and my dad was fascinated. Of course whenever I ask a question or try to come into the conversation I just get slightly accknowleged or completely ignored. Then we're talking about water... and soil.... you can guess where this is going. Let me tell you, I live by mt hood in a county that runs off of agriculture and the mountain has less than 80% of the snowpack it normally has this time of year which provides water for the county below.... My parents are watering weeds all day long in windy, 80 plus weather because they are trying to make a pasture out of clay dirt and construction fill at their new giant house... not gonna work. From my soil classes and water resource classes I know exactly what they have to do with rotation plant types and fertilizers and efficient watering but no, they just keep watering all day. And when you do that it actually will fry your plants because the water reflection brings in more solar rays... like when you're tanning by a pool. And most of the water is wasted, evaporated in the wind and heat... while we're going through a drought... Anyways tonight I suggested they stop watering all day long and put a rotation crop on their soil with tons of compost to get the real soil back... After contently listening to my boyfriend's virus conversation my dad turns to me and tells me it sounds like i've been taught by too many dope smokers and reading too many hippy books.... I got up from the table and went to recycle stuff in the garage because i felt like I was gonna start crying... now he's all sorry but fuck I am so over it, if people are going to keep being this way to those who actually care about the change happening in the world then fuck it. I'm going to start being a bitch about it and go hippy shit bonkers. The economy will fail without sustainable use of resouces its so stupid how people don't get it. If you have a shit ton of butter and you bake a bunch of cookies eventually you will have no more butter because some things just don't turn back into butter that quick. California is in top ten economies of the world and they are running out of water and water is what makes their soy bean factories, almond factories which is also for almond butter, almond milk, almond extract... we can live without that so lets just use water till we can't make fucking almonds anymore, CA will blow up and all the trillions and billions of people who live there can just drink piss. God fucking A just thinking about all the stupid people who have approached me calling me a hippy for studying soil, water, and ecosystems can go sit in a vat of polluted browny tish. To all the people who are hippies and are talking about the green evolution but don't really know what your talking about... please stop. It's killing me alive. And to you who think the ice sheets are growing and global warming is fake.... Learn about volume and mass. And again to the people who call anyone who is studying environmental scientists or natural resource managers or sustainable business managers a hippy or doubt their knowledge- crack open a book, read a scientific journal or something.. learn about the difference between climate change and weather for christ sake... gah.. k sorry I'm done now.

Honestly, I don't understand much about soil and weather, but the way you explained it all makes perfect sense.

As much as I agree with you about global warming and cars factories causing it. I know that the greed of man will not let them admit it. We will not quit using fossil fuel until we reach the point of no return. Then our earth will be another Venus. People like you are right but to few and can't fight the rich and powerful.
That don't mean you should not try. Read about what they did to Salton Sea in Ca. It was going to be another Palm Springs until they killed it in the early 70's.

Wow...if only I knew you in real life. I actually read the whole thing and you sound incredible. You've got a good head on your shoulders and clear goals. Companies and politicians will be forced to reevaluate their wasteful approach to natural resources due to scarcity. You are well positioned for a bright future. Bravo!

I understand. I'm a biology major and my parents have also questioned whether I'll be able to get a job. I don't think it would matter what major I picked, they'd still be saying that. My dad kept pulling up the salaries for wildlife ecologists on his phone and insinuating that I would be poor. It doesn't matter what he thinks because he blew all of his savings on pyramid schemes. So just do what you're passionate about.
