Non-english speaking people

So, everytime I'm in another country (like Spain or Canada), I always shake people and demand that they speak English to me. Some would say that this is wrong, but I think that it's a very polarizing matter. What do you guys think; is it wrong or not?

If you are going to another country, you should at least learn some of the language of that country. I live in Texas and work in a retail shop, and we have a hell of a lot of Mexican immigrants. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against immigrants or Mexicans, but a lot of the time, they come up to me speaking Spanish, as if I'm supposed to already just know it, and nothing pisses me off more. If we were in Mexicao, it would be fine. In that case, I should be the one learning their language, considering I am in their country and that is their native tongue, but since they are the one's down here, I think that they should learn a little bit of english before expecting me to know how to communicate. I honestlty think that it is foolish of you to go to someone's country and expect them to learn know your language. Have you any idea how annoying that is? I suggest if you want to visit Canada or Spain, learn the language. It's only respectful.

Yeah, I'm sure making demands of someone in a language they probably don't even understand is very effective. Nice one, idiot. I hope someone shakes you!

I thought loads of Canadians spoke French only. Or at least preferred not to talk in English if they don't have to.

I don't think there are a lot of them. They likely know some english but I've never gone around shaking Quebecers to find out.

You are just a typical ugly American. One in every twenty Americans, blends in so well with good manners that nobody recognizes they are a foreigner.

I live in Australia. We're so multicultural I don't need to leave the country to find a non English speaking person to shake. I just have to walk out my front door and ask a passer-by for the time.
Reminds me, this one time I went to a coffee place and ordered a "medium flat white" the guy could hardly speak English and gave me a sausage roll... How the hell does medium flat white sound like sausage roll? Who the hell gave him a job? Where the hell was his passport? Don't know, hell, he probably didn't even have one.
Boy you bet I wanted to shake him.

Mhm, exactly this. When you go to doctors and they literally cannot speak English without their extreme accent, you wonder how they get their degree.
Once we went to a small clinic to ask for some assistance, we were lead to an Indian doctor (not racism, just their accent is particularly annoying, due to Indian Telemarketers trying to scam you at all time and cost, in Australia). We couldn't understand him and eventually had to call a translating person on the phone (I'm not sure what they are called), and got the doctor to speak Indian and translate back to English for us.
Then in the end, he was very unhappy, and said, "can you not understand me? I speak proper English, see, A! I can speak properly" (in his accent, he's A sounded like L) So excuse me for not understand their 'proper' English...

Actually, parts of Canada still speaks French. English is the main language, but French is mainly taught in schools. However, I think in Quebec, most speak very fluent French.
