This is the same thing that happened between my ex and I except I was the one to leave and push him away... our relationship was the best I could ever ask for, but I said things w/o thinking throughly or during my sad hours, later regretting it.
Some people who suffer from depression sometimes go through this. Their emotions tends to be all over the place, soemtimes they want to be happy and talkative and other times they just want to be left alone so they close everyone out. Most likely, he liked you back but was tired of getting "help" and wanted to be left alone. DOn't blame yourself though.
So sorry to hear that some times these things happen for a reason even when you do not understand why. You will just have to trust that things will work out for the better.
If you tried to help him and gave him love when he needed it, then it's his loss. Forget him and move on.
