Not moved out yet because i can't afford it?

Is this normal

27 years old
Salary $34K a year
Can't move out. Cheapest apartments found are $1500 a month to live in some basement that's $18k a year for just the apartment but with gas, health insurance, phone bill, water bill, food etc per month that's not livable. Calculates at close to $30k a year.

Also even if I did live in one of those it's a tiny spot with just a bed a tiny bath and a hot plate for an oven. And you live under the house so you'll have lots of noise. There are crap apartments offered as low as $2000 a month but again not affordable also they're crap. My friend lives in a 2k apartment it's bad she has loud neighbors in the complex and the shower hasn't worked for 3 weeks now. This is her second cheap apartment where something went wrong. The last one her faucet didn't work.

But I can't even afford that even though I'd love it as it gets me to be moved out of my family's house. Is it normal?

Don't tell me to move my entire family and friends are here and my job. It took me ages to get a decent salary job in my field and I don't like any of the states a few hours away.

I had roomates many times when money was tight.

I found the better solution was to rent a room in a house that an older person/couple owned with kitchen privileges. That was cheaper than splitting an apartment with a roommate, and always provided better shared space.

I suggest that you look at other income options as well. Many people work a part time job in addition to their full time job. My wife's part time job pays as much as her full time job (but the full time job includes health insurance and other benefits).

    I myself have several businesses.

I wish you well with this

Holy fuck that's expensive. I don't blame you for not moving out. Those prices are insane.

    • Huh? So you propose I be homeless instead? My parents don't raise me in fact they're hardly home? I pay for my own groceries, gas, phone bill, medical bills and more. I spent 9 years on my social worker degree and experience. All my own doing, I have a full time job, I would love to move out.

What do you think the reason for this post is? In new york city it's common for people to live with their family. I only know 3 of my friends who don't but one is a lawyer, I'm not. The other two moved state but I don't want to if I can avoid it as my life is here.

How do you propose I get a job that pays $50k a year? Tell me I'd love to know.

Edit: And how am I a leech? I used all my own money and started working at 16. My parents never helped me with money. In fact when I was 16, I had to help them just to afford rent so I paid them $250 a month from my job all the way from 16-18 until my father finally got a better job. You don't even know my life. I've been in and out of the hospital for the past 10 years because of a serious medical condition and have worked hard the whole time. I almost died twice. Life is not the same for everyone. I don't even know how long I have but call me a leech.

If u find a spouse that also makes 34k a year thats almost 70k a year. Sometimes you can also move about 30-45 minutes away and the housing is much cheaper. Of course you have a 30-45 minute drive but its better than paying 1500

You need a roommate. Appartments aren't priced for one person, even the studio apartments. No, I am not kidding. If you want to live in a city and you aren't making 50k+, you need a roommate.

Most appartments are specifically priced for couples.

There's websites that you can use to apply for one if none of your friends want to room with you.

    • Even if I had a roommate it's 2k a month for open floor plan, I'd have to pay 1k a month so I can't afford that because I have other bills and I'd have to sleep in the same bed. I have a medical condition so sleep with cpap for breathing, have to keep a strict schedule and wake up screaming often. I was roomed with someone during college she moved out within a week lol. Wouldn't work unfortunately.

I hate saying this, as I know it's not something you want to hear...but 34,000 a year in New York City likely isn't going to work out under that scenario. Just being realistic with you. Pretty much any internet search will tell you what you're trying to do (Live in New York City without a roommate at 34k) is unfeasible.

You might possibly get away with what WeirdGuy suggested and find a cheaper place 30 or so minutes away.

(Edit: Not trying to sound snarky. I just want to be honest.)

        • It's hard to find social work jobs as it is. You're not coming across as rude don't worry. I grew up in New York City so my family and friends are here. I also go to a local community center to help every weekend so it's my home but I know what you're saying

That’s a decent salary living in an area where your cost of living is so high??? What’re you? A teacher?

    • I'm a social worker in New York City. 6 year degree + 3 years of training.I love what I do but pay isn't high for it. I kept seeing 28-30k so 34k was luck. I know online it shows 40-50k average but that's not what I found. I got an interview for a 39k position but that was the highest offer and they turned me down said I was too young.

        • Hm depends I guess where you work. My friend works at a local restaurant as a waiter and doesn't break 40K.

I'm curious on as to where exactly they're located as well. 1,500 for a basement under a house is incredibly expensive. Most major cities will at least offer studio apartments for that price.
