Office work or construction?

I'm having a hard time finding work because of this I'm being told to apply for a cscs card and go to a day training place that could lead to construction work, look, I realise that work is work the majority of people don't enjoy what they do and that's just life so I'm going for it and will take any job that comes my way, but I would rather do any job in the world that construction, rather spend all day staring at spreadsheets, rather spend all day in customer service trying to be polite to people who are yelling at me, rather spend all day cleaning toilets or changing and washing old people

I often hear that the office environment is the worst place to work but the idea of doing physical labour all day everyday depresses me so much more, what would you rather do?

I'd rather do office work. But I'd recommend pursuing the thing you really enjoy more. At least, that's what I'm planning to do.

Excellent answer, I'm glad you decided to come back here. I read some of your earlier responses and was quite impressed.

I plan to eventually but I could do with a little more experience first, as well as some money for a part time uni course I'm look at doing so I see this job as a necessary evil to get to that

Your question reminds me of my first job out of high school. I was gone all week working on a crew that built agricultural structures. On payday of the second week I walked into the office to ask for my check. I told the girl my name and she asked "are you working on erection?" I was really shy and introverted back then and was momentarily speachless as I mulled her question. I was thinking "not really WORKING on it, it just comes naturally when I see a pretty girl", but then she interrupted my thoughts and asked if I was on the building crew. I'm sure she noticed how red my face got at her question. Now that I know women a little better I'm sure she did that on purpose and she and the other secretaries had a good laugh over it after I left.

Construction work pays much better than general office work. I know guys in construction earning $100k+ a year yet still complain they dont get paid enough

If someone is willing to give you work, take it. Dreams don't pay the bills

I've personally done both, and there are drawbacks to both.

I worked as an IC, but it was a more specialized feild than general "construction" work, but I did manage job sites for subcontracted remodels... I mean I can go into detail if you're interested in hearing about my experience at both jobs. I don't want to bore you with details lol.

There's advantages and drawbacks to each. Office work can be stressful, but it's more about managing office politics and relationships...it was almost like a middle school type of environment...there's a lot of passive aggressive politics. You have to be able to defer to people, respect people, internalize stress, multitask, and put on a happy face- I found this to be more stressful.

A physical job like construction...idk how to describe it, you learn a trade, work with your hands, you externalize a lot of stress because of the physical nature of the job, but the environment is totally different than the office, more open, sort of. It's more like a pissing contest than people deferring to anyone, so the environment can be more competitive in a totally different way, and more aggressive and sweary(?). Idk how to describe it, but it's nothing like an office...there's a lot of shit talking and almost hazing, but it's fun if you have a thick skin.

I mean, you're learning a trade and a skill, but construction's been hit hard by the recession, at least in America, so there can be a lot of stress involved.

It just depends on your personality type. Do you like managing relationships with people that are polite rather than aggressive, and biting your tongue and doing your job, or do you prefer people that are open, and honest, but a little more arrogant and aggressive about their expertise? How do you prefer to manage stress? Do you do better with people that are nice, but possibly passive aggressive, or people that are blundt? I'm totally stereotyping here, but I've worked on A LOT of construction sites lol.

What makes you think those in construction hate it? I'd much rather be a part of building something than sitting on my ass doing spreadsheets.
How could one possibly compare the pride and rewards of building something compared to the feeling of desperation and uselessness one must get as a drone, filling in boxes on spreadsheets each and every day?
You just sound like a lazy shit, to me.

      I clearly didn't say that I said * I * don't want to work in construction

And how am I lazy? I've done work from leafleting to being team assistant at prince's trust to being a runner for Amazon, that's not including volunteer warehouse work for the British heart foundation and as a youth worker at tokko youth centre, I jog at least 5 miles a day as well as climbing and lifting weights and toning exercises, I generally like being active

Which is one of the reasons I don't want to do do construction work, when I was a runner for Amazon I would come home aching all over and the last thing i wanted to do was go for a 5 mile jog or do my exercises,

Also, if I were lazy I would refuse the work, I've already said I'll grab whatever construction job I can find
