My nana was such a slow driver, best thing they ever did was take the old bag off the road.

    Ps, sorry nan, love you.

My dad sure ain't one of 'em... He is in his sixties and can drive even faster than me and keep a car on the edge. I pick up fast driving from him.

One time we even raced to our house in the mountains... My mom was at the house, waiting for us. I was being my usual self flooring the E420 from a standstill, spinning wheels, sliding through a few corners I know very well and my dad called me, he was driving behind me.

Told me "Are you gonna drive like an adult, or play around like a kid... Let's see if you got what it takes to keep up with your old man"
I'm a pretty fast driver, I usually drive 140-150kmh on country roads in Bulgaria and rarely fall under 180 on the highway.
We picked a stretch without much traffic and decided to have a little friendly race... Me in my souped up, 400hp, 950Nm, twin-turbo V8 beast of a car with Pirelli P-zero sport tires and him in his 2018, bone-stock 190hp VW Tiguan.
On some straights I overtook him with ease, but in the corners, he'd destroy me. Floor it, overtake me before a corner and hold that VW at the edge.

He beat me! Later when we arrived at the house, he told me I'm in charge of keeping his beer glass full tonight for being a smartass and losing.
I told him something wasn't right with the MAF sensor on my car and that's why I lost. But in reality, I lost cause my dad can keep a car on the edge, he's still got it and he isn't a showoff XD

This summer tho, we agreed to another showdown. This time on a track day, in the same car... my E420.

So not all old people drive in first gear forever... Some drive in 6th and 7th a lot XD

But in general most old people drive slower... Slower reflexes, bad eyesight, a lot on their minds. If only slow drivers in general stuck to the right lane and left those of us who drive faster to overtake in peace, there'd be no accidents.

I mean do you know what it's like to blast down the Autobahn at 260kmh and have an old lady in a Corsa pop out from behind a truck driving at 82kmh... It's a scary experience and a true test for your reflexes and car!

My father was reaching the point where he needed to give up driving and accept the limitations that his neurological issues were creating on his response time, etc. He was in denial and we kids were still unaware how bad it had gotten. One week he came to stay with me and I loaned him my Mitsubishi Eclipse to use one day. As his third wife had alway done the driving, he was also unaware of the effect that using a cell phone had on his attention to other things he was doing. One evening he seemed particularly rattled and didn't eat much, and was quite quiet (which was very much unlike him). He retired to bed early, and I happened to be outside when I noticed there were corn stalks, long weeds and grass hanging off the undercarriage of my Eclipse in the garage. The next day i waited to see if he was going to ask to use the car again for the day, but when it was time for him to head out, he said, "I think I'll walk the rest of the week." From that week on, whenever he would call and I would be in the car, he would ask, "Are you in the car!?!? DON'T TALK ON THE PHONE AND TRY TO DRIVE! I'll call you later!!!".

depends on the person some do drive slow some do not. i think after a certain age everyone should get some kind of test to make sure they still posses the skill to drive see a lot of older people i think should not be driving, they can hardly walk yet they drive i say this and agree fot the test and i am 65 so dont think i am being bias against older drivers

Not normal, but beware of drivers wearing anything on their heads.

first gear is just for spinnin wheels

I'm in my mid-sixties. I work through the gears pretty quickly when setting off from a stop and generally I stick to the speed limit. However, I don't view the posted speed limit as being the speed all traffic should always travel on a particular stretch of road regardless of the driving conditions, so it's not unusual for me to have some young twat sitting on my back bumper.

In Britain, the default speed limit on rural roads is 60 mph. That applies even on roads that are so narrow there's not enough room for two cars to get past each other and where there's nothing but one blind curve after another. Only an idiot would try to stick to sixty on roads like that, but there's no shortage of prats - usually young and usually testosterone-fuelled - who do just that. The speed limit in urban areas is 30 mph, but only a fool will stick to that in areas where there are loads of junctions where you can't see vehicles that might be coming from side-roads or where there are lots of kids messing around behind cars parked along the road.

I'm certain there are older drivers who shouldn't be on the road at all because they can't see well and some who have some sort of neurological condition which affects the speed of their decision making and reflexes. But the statistics clearly show that the majority of accidents are caused by young drivers who overestimate their skills and lack the ability to anticipate potential hazards that you only acquire after driving for years.

Until I retired at 68 ( two and a half years ago) I did three, four thousand miles a week, had an X type Jaguar so didn't hang about.

I dont care the age, prius drivers tend to go slow too.
    But, if you go slow.
Get your car in the slow lane.
    and stay there.

Blame the car, not the driver. Electric bikes have more power than a Prius.

That doesnt excuse the prius driver getting into the fast lane, then driving as slow as the slow lane.
        Stay in your lane.
slower traffic stay to the right.

I wasn't excusing them, just pointing out the weakass car. This issue is not unique to old people or Priuses. Calm down.

            Ok, again:
            Stay in your lane.
If you drive a weak car.
Like to go exactly the speed limit.
            Cant drive in rain, etc.
            STAY IN THE SLOW LANE!
Dont be the shit head going slow holding up traffic in the fast lane.
            Cant you read?
Slower traffic stay to the right.
            stay right, except to PASS.

Except to let people merge onto the highway. That's the worst. People don't know how to drive and no one thinks they are the problem.

Someone told me that old people drive slow because in their day the fastest speed a car could go was 40 miles per hour. I dunno if that's true or not. XD

My grandfather's 1968 Mercury regular raced down the road at 100mph. We may need to define "old"

suspension geometry hasnt changed too much but theres been advances and cars are just as heavy now as they were then

the big advances are in brake systems and shock absorbers passenger safety systems and also another 50 yearsa r&d plus computer aided design & simulation

the biggest single advance is tires though
