  • Hmm. Who should pass away sooner. Those with gross outside appearances or those gross on the inside...Decisions, decisions.

    • Smokers destroy their insides. They end up with "gross outside appearances" that reflect whatever is "gross on the inside". Do you disregard the evidence? Smoking is linked with high blood pressure. You know that stuff like atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure? That's due to the chronic inflammation. Mmm, okay. My bets are with the medical research instead. Beyond the literal, you just think I'm being cruel and inhumane? Its more cruel for me to have to see disease that is entirely preventable. My senses want to see healthy people, not destruction. Smokers are essentially performing self-suicide. I'm thinking develop a will to live, please? Like, try? It particularly disgusting to see senseless destruction.

It'll be amusing if, for all your compassion and empathy, you die of some disease that robs you of your health and looks in such a way as you've described.

Anyone can get ill regardless of whether they smoke or not.

I knew someone who found too late she had lung cancer. Straight to palliative care. Never smoked, exercised regularly, ate healthy. Within a year she died, but not before she turned to skin and bone - Gollum-esque. Lost her ability to communicate due to the cancer spreading to her brain. Under 60.

    • Some people get struck by asteroids. Worse? lots of life went extinct from a giant meteor colliding with the earth. So, the theory goes. Compassion? You're throwing an anomaly example. Useless. Deal is, smokers tend to be nasty, especially those that STINK of fumes. Worse? Those that bring their hacker cough public. If you can't keep your shit habit to yourself, go home please and die already.

Clearly, employers think the same thing these days for two reasons. 1. Pathetic addict smokers cost TOO much, are absent too often, and under-perform because they're chronically distracted by this fixation. 2. They're not very welcome among non-smokers.

Should I mention that in real estate, homes that are smoke-free sell at a better price? Same goes for cars. Nobody wants a smoke-infested hotel either. Looks as if restaurants are promoting an entirely smoke-free atmosphere.

Hilarious example! People can get lung cancer from all sorts of insults. There's environmental pollutants. Heck, there are viruses that can corrupt your DNA to spark cancer. I'm sure that lady didn't parade around in public hacking sputum all over people. I'm sure she didn't huddle at doorways with a pack of neurotic addicts fuming the entryway. I'm sure she didn't pitch litter all over the place. Shit happens to us all. What next? You going to tell me about the poor 8 year old child with leukemia? I have humanity but it is selective. I unselect smokers. Why don't I list the sad cases involving infants born to ignorant mothers who smoke during pregnancy. Cigarette smoke is a teratogen which causes horrific birth defects that are preventable.

There are smokers who lose their jaw from cancer. They may have to have a tracheostomy. Smoke inhalation leads to hypertension and heart disease. Exactly, how is that worth smoking? I'm thinking WTF! Quit! Quit that idiotic self-destructive habit. Educate your fucking self to realize this is an addiction that can be defeated. Duh! Too many people kick the habit. All they need to do is decide to quit. The rest is purely mind training to reform their habits.

I hate these in denial smoke-tards that light up anywhere they please. They look like chronic languishing misery. Not exactly company I want to keep, nope.

Who's asking you to keep company with them? Are you so out of control of your own life you don't choose where you go or what you do?

You don't sound like the sort of company most people would like to keep.

        • Medical is my world. These people don't go away. Yes, I should look on the bright side here. They keep healthcare booming. True as that. But, they cost taxpayers an enormous sum of money. Most of these addicts I see are sucking off of Medicare, yet, continuing a destructive habit. This isn't a true disease. It is preventable. What a shame. Its worse to see some dirty hag smoker parent with children in tow. Fantastic, I'm sure those kids love their great role model addict parent. That's really responsible of that parent. Lets see, smoking increases that parent's risk of heart disease. Is that a good parent? No, its selfish, piss poor irresponsibility.

Oh yes, I'm the jerk for pointing it all out? Good.

Smokers are a vile lot of disordered shit. You tell them how they can stop suffering, yet they choose this demented default action. I see them come in for respiratory treatments. Waste of time and money! They're great for Darwin jokes. I can't stand the sight of them. If you're going to to this shit, do it someplace I can't see it. Pick up your damn butts, or I swear I'll try my best to impose a tax on that silly product you buy so someone can keep things nice and clean. Pickup your own health care costs,or at least send the bill to Philip Morris. Better option? Quit. I still haven't met one of these off the deep end addicts that show much personal character or brains to try quitting. They shrug their shoulders or laugh in denial. My final sensible conclusion here? That kind of addict is a lost cause.

Oh silly me. Of course you had no choice to go into the medical field. Of course you weren't to expect that there would be people who were aged and diseased for various reasons, including smoking. Od course you shouldn't have any level of compassion for ill people, regardless of the reasons behind their illness. Of course you should clearly have no understanding of addiction and how it works.

My mother was a smoker. She raised two children who are disgusted by cigarettes. We both have chosen not to smoke. Many people raised by smokers choose not to smoke.

You've never known anyone who quit smoking? My grandmother, aunt and mother have all quit. I know friends of theirs who have quit.

You cannot control the actions of others. People do many things that are detrimental to their health and I doubt you are exempt from this. You can control your own actions. Maybe you should focus on yourself instead.

Maybe you should find a new job since you're clearly lacking in several skills required for it, and you find my story of a healthy woman dying a painful and undignified death as "hhilarious".

            • Excuse me, I'm realizing that you're just too uneducated to get my gripes.

If you insist on it, I can give you cited evidence. If you insist, I can blah de dah about my knowledge of the addiction process for tobacco. Oops, its really nicotine they seek. Yes, former smokers exist. They can quit.

This is a gripe. In real life, moron, I treat these people very well. I have ethics. They only see the face of compassion. I still think the overboard addicts ought to hurry up and die off already.

Medical? Expectations? I love it. You should listen in on the running commentary that happens behind the scenes. People have to talk to get it out of their system. We see just how STUPID patients can be. This doesn't mean that we care less. On the contrary!

Parents should quit that habit. If they so-called love their children, they can muster up the strength to do it. Its an addiction. Cigarettes aren't a nutrient. You don't need it. Its not water, its not oxygen. We all know damn well that it leads to chronic illness, forget that it reduces a person's lifespan, or lets them live an ailing pathetic existence. One can get through a few weeks of withdrawal issues to get clean. There is rehab and support.

You should be present when one jackass smoker is getting his Medicare-funded treatments while someone else suffering pneumonia or whatever is one room over. WTF! That Medicare-moocher is going to light up the moment he leaves here. Useless.

So OP, you have no bad habits at all which adversely affect your health? You live the perfect 100% healthy lifestyle, do you?

Do you think the same way when you see younger smokers? Otherwise, you're being ageist. It was their choice to smoke. I'm sure they have loved ones telling them all of the time that smoking isn't healthy. But, smoking is an addiction and addiction are hard to cure. They're already dying from smoking and being old. But, for you to wish death on them is very disturbing.

Its not nice to wish death on people but...I have felt repulsion at old smokers. I was at the vet yesterday and this old lady was hacking and had those deep wrinkles only smoking causes and I was kind of grossed out cause she looked like a cigarette hag.

I stopped smoking because I got tired of wasting my money and getting bronchitis ever year. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and to be honest smoking feels weird and unnatural in the dry desert air. It was relatively easy for me to quit.

    Your compassion is overwhelming!
Do you realize that not only was smoking not generally known to be dangerous, it was promoted for anyone old enough to fit your scenario, when they were young?
The military GAVE cigarettes to the GI's. They were 25 cents a pack and constant cigarette ads everywhere you made it seem that smoking made one sexy and attractive to the opposite sex.
I didn't begin until I was at war and the remote possibility of dying somewhere down the line seemed a pretty good trade off to dying any minute in battle, in exchange for the calming benifits.
    Your compassion is fucking overwhelming!

Yep, when I started smoking in my teens there were no warnings, all I was ever told was that it wasn't "ladylike" and not wanting to be a lady that didn't put me off. By the time it was generally known how harmful it is I was already addicted and didn't finally stop until 5 years ago.
