People who don't believe in a God, naturally also don't believe a God can punish them for any crime they may commit. Still, the vast majority of atheists don't become criminals. Morality alone is enough to keep them in check.

But what about those very few atheists, to whom morality ISN'T reason enough to behave themselves? They would only be kept in check IF they believed a certain God would punish them. Regarding such people, isn't religion necessary?

Religion may be nonsense alright, but what if good things (like people not engaging in crime) came from it regardless?

    I am what you call atheist, and if you need a god to have morality you better go see a doctor because "god" has noting to do with morals its what you believe is right and wrong and not your god.

    To be frank wih you most atheists just want to be left alone; to believe what they believe and not be judged. All types of people do bad things regardless of their religion. Your religion does not specifically make you do the right or worng thing, morality will always rule. So I agree with the person above me; their are tons of criminals that are religious.

    EVIL1234, when's the last time you saw an atheist church? Atheism isn't a religion. It's the lack of religion. And to answer the original question, what about all the crazies who did sick shit and claimed "God" told them to?

    I am christian (from England) so its alot more relaxed, for one I think that God has left, or died along time ago. Therefore Morality falls down to free will, meaning that because we have free will we have the choice to do good and bad just like God himself...or herself...itself maybe? anyway, Athists are contradictor anyway they dont belive in God and have formed a religion about it WTF? back on track. And somebody said that "JUST MEN NEED NO LAWS". I would love to go into more detail but I know I will probably get some hate comments
