Opinions on getting dogs cropped?

I know it can be a kind of a controversial topic, however personally I support cropping as long as it's done responsibly by a person who is experienced in the procedure such as a veterinarian. I know there are a lot of idiots out there who think they can crop their dogs ears themselves or get someone with no experience to do it which ends up in permanently harming the dogs ears or leave them in pain.

Some people think cropping hurts the dog even if done by a professional, however that isn't the case. The dog is put under anesthesia during the procedure as well as the dog being given pain medication afterwards. Recovery time is very quick, right after they wake up usually they spring to life without any problems.

I know some people think cropping is just for looks, which some people do get their dogs cropped just for that reason however cropping can have health benefits. Floppy/folded ears aren't natural, and air and bacteria gets trapped in the ears which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria leading to severe ear infections. Folded eared dogs are at a much higher risk of hematoma and various ear infections and rashes because of this.

This is why I support cropping, as it does have health benefits and can help the dog in the long run.

Coming from a veterinarian's perspective; I hate ear cropping.

The only times I will ever perform an ear cropping procedure are for:

    * The dog has chronic ear infections pertaining to collapsed cartilage that traps moisture that promotes the development of yeast, bacteria, etc.
    * The dog is a hunting dog ( boar, alligator, etc. ) and needs its long ears cropped to avoid serious injuries from having them bitten onto
    * The dog has chronic hematomas from capillaries busting in the ears from head shaking.

Anyone who walks into my practice wanting a dog's ears cropped for aesthetic purposes is promptly turned away and essentially given a professional "fuck off" because its entirely inhumane. The recovery time is very individual based and even an ear cropping performed correctly can have serious consequences. I can tell you about a pitbull puppy who became completely neurological, blind, and deaf, from an ear cropping procedure that became infected and attacked her brain. Because they wanted her to look "intimidating". I was not the performing doctor, and when we told the owners she was essentially fucked, they wanted to euthanize her. We had them surrender and my good friend and technician now owns her. Her name is Drama.

To explain cropping by the way - you literally take a pair of surgery scissors and cut the ears off. I've heard of people doing it with lasers, but this is incredibly uncommon. The procedure is crude and should only be performed for medical or working dog reasons.

Just my opinion, I respect yours entirely. People are entitled to their beliefs!

I think people who crop their own dog's ears should be not only fined, but jailed as well. I'm not fond of the practice of cropping dogs ears, but if it must be done it should only be done by a licensed veterinarian. I think people who crop their own dogs' ear are trash, and should face legal consequences for their actions.

I also think it should be illegal to declaw cat!

There are so many stupid people out in the world!

    • Dewclawing a cat is different to a crop, declawing a cat has no positive health effects and has a high risk of the cat having permanent pain even if done by a veterinarian. Cropping has health benefits such as preventing high risk ear infections and hematoma, and the dog does not suffer in pain when done by a professional.

    • Ear cropping, tail docking, cat declawing, it should all be banned. Of course, then there would be no more show dogs because they wouldn't conform to the breed "standard".

Some owners even remove their dogs' vocal chords to eliminate barking. Pretty vile shit.

Hmm I don't like when people crops dogs ears. But heres what I believe. I don't like declawing, removing vocals so cats or dogs can be quiet or cropping ears or tails. Now I understand if some medical emergency or health issue needs an animal part to remove. But I'm fully aganist it. Now this is only my opinion. Thanks for reading.

    • Why do you think it should be illegal?

It's barbaric and should be illegal. Dogs communicate with their ears and cropping takes this away. Not only are you hampering the ability you're diminishing your relationship with your dog.

There are also lasting psychological effects for the animal.

I suspect you're posting to be controversial but if not please reconsider.

    • Dogs with cropped ears can still move their ears around and communicate with other dogs, there's videos of dobermans and such on youtube where you can clearly see that if you'd like examples. Cropped ears are not stiff, the dog can still move their ears down/up.

I haven't found any evidence with reliable sources of these "psychological effects", although I'm sure it can happen if the crop is done by a non-experienced person who messes the dogs ears up because they don't know what they're doing. I don't really think there would be any lasting effects when the cropping is done right by a professional such as a vet.
