Overly sentimental animal lovers annoy me

By "overly sentimental animal lovers", I don't mean people who love animals to death, animal activists and organizations like HSUS and SPCA, or pet lovers whose lives revolve around their pets. I'm okay with those people. I'm talking about those people whose sentimentality about certain animals clouds their logical and moral thinking and turn them into emotional nuts. For example, the people who say "OMGG that animal is so majestic and cute how dare you eat them why can't you just eat an ugly smelly cow instead I hope you die!". For example, those people who whine about people eating octopus because "they're so smart and mysterious" and rabbits because "they're sooo cute". Okay, I can understand people who oppose eating animals that are viewed as pets in many cultures (like dogs, cats, horses), protected species, or perhaps if there is near-ubiquitous animal abuse in the industry, but those who start opposing consumption of certain animals just because it conflicts with their personal sentimentality (like "they're too cute/smart/beautiful/etc.) are one of my greatest pet peeves. Or those people who protest spaying/neutering their pets because for being "cruel": Yeah, would you rather have them abused, abandoned, turn into rabid stray dogs on the street and finally put down at a shelter instead? Or those activists who get so emotional by breaking into a lab/slaughterhouse/farm/etc. and "liberating" the captive animals into the wild, often ignoring the warnings that they can't handle the wild and will most likely die of exposure or perhaps ravage local wildlife. And don't get me started on those who get outraged about wild animals eating each other and then go off onto tangents like "why didn't you help that poor innocent gazelle from being by that lion eaten I hope you die" and "I hate [predator animal] they're so cruel I hope they go extinct".

Granted, I agree that it is wrong to abuse any sentient being, and I do agree that we need to reduce pain inflicted upon animals. I also don't have a problem with vegans, level-headed and logical animal activists, or even those who like animals more than people. The above I am okay with. I am also quite concerned and upset about animal abuse as well. I am referring to those animal lovers who have little to no knowledge of animals or nature in general and judge every moral action involving animals by Disneyfied gushy sentimentality with no logical basis.

Is it normal to be annoyed by those people?

I didn't quite understand what you meant at first, but then I got it. I'm all for conservation and animal rights, and the only meat I eat is shellfish. I know the kind of people you're referring to, they seem to pick and choose what animals they care about instead of caring about all of them. Like my mom adores horses, but doesn't like pigs. Why is it any better to treasure horses and say they shouldn't be eaten? Why can't pigs get the same protection?

It's also impossible to watch a nature show with her. Every time a predator kills something, she's like "Turn off the TV! I can't stand seeing those animals killed!" It's like well why don't you go kill your own damn cow next time you want a burger? If you can't stand to even see the killing on TV, then you sure as hell won't be able to watch how that cow dies in the slaughterhouse. At least gazelles have the opportunity to escape from lions....

    • I'm not exactly referring to people who feel repulsed by animals eating each other. That's understandable. The people I was referring to were those who actually morally object and protest the act of animals eating each other.

No my mother does that too. She said lions are nasty because she doesn't like how they kill things. She judges animals for killing other animals. I think it's pretty stupid how she's prejudiced against certain species

My mother does the exact same thing. If someone's watching a documentary about animals and the ugly carnivores arrive, she complains about how evil they are and how they shouldn't exist. Oddly enough, she's also a creationist.
