People from the south (usa), does this really happen at your schools?

I was talking to my friend from South Carolina and she told me her bio teacher in school said this at the first day of class:

"Well we all know the lord himself created everything in the universe but I am FORCED BY THE LAW to teach you this garbage."

I was absolutely appalled and speechless. I couldn't believe a BIOLOGY teacher would even think of saying that. My friend told me this kind of things happens often at schools in the south; the teacher would often inform the student what they are about to teach are absolutely false but they are forced to by the law. I live in the west and things like this would NEVER occur (at least from my experience). I was honestly embarrassed to live in the same country as the creationist idiots from the south.

Please tell me this does not happen often in the south...

It's the opposite here at least where I go to school. I don't remember much in high school except my biology teacher saying, " I don't care whether you believe in creation or the big bang theory. Either way, you can't go from nothing to something." Now in college, one of my professors just comes out and says "Creation is bullshit." lol.

  • The Almighty Lord will smite you for this blasphemy against all he, in his infinite mercy and wisdom, has created and in his own image he has created you.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power, God of might. Blessed are he who come in the name of the Lord.

The smiting shall begin shortly, soon you will be counted among those that call themselves the smoten.

    Why is he an idiot?
He's just faithful to his religion, teacher's can't be religious?

No, it's because the teacher is brushing off what he was teaching. Imagine that happening in a religious studies class and you'd probably have a similar reaction. Teachers shouldn't put their personal religious/political ideals in classroom settings.

Sorry for the lateness of this comment. I am from SC and I never heard anything close to that. I think she was messing with you.

...why would it be just in the south? Aren't there religious people all over the country? I mean, I live in the south and yes, every where I turn there's a church on the corner, but I have never ever met a teacher who said, "Science is crap, go and pick up a bible." I think that's a horrible representation of the south. And it also gives religious people a bad name.

I know some religious people can be like that, but not all of us. It's just as bad for someone who doesn't believe in God to say, "Religion is stupid," as it is for a religious person to say, "You're going to hell if you don't conform to our ways."

I could never understand why the hell it matters. People have their beliefs, if it's not bothering you, then what difference does it make?

I thought I heard someone tell me this happened/s at a catholic (or was it Christian??) college near me. I don't think they called it garbage though..I mean why would you teach it if you don't like it anyways?
