I live in a relatively fire safe area, but I'm so sick of breathing in all the haze and smoke that comes from towns that are being destroyed by fires in other parts of CA. I always wonder what I'm breathing in... I imagine it's a house that a couple put their life savings into, didn't pay fire insurance, lost everything.
interesting way to put it. i remember seeing a home for sale once and i looked into the garage windows and hand painted on the cinderblocks was some inspirational message like 'follow your dreams'. found out later the house had been foreclosed upon and was supposedly on a sink hole. really wonder what happened to whoever lived there, and lost their home unless they died or killed themself.
Normal that smoke is irritating your lungs, it irritates mine too and I have emphysema, so I use fire fighter approved smoke masks when there's a lot of smoke in the area.
Fact for you to think about: smoke from uninsured buildings is exactly the same as smoke from insured buildings.
If someone owns or is buying a house, they have GOT to carry insurance on it. I do not know if it is the law but it is too big a risk NOT to.
I do know that if someone has a mortgage on your home it will be a requirement that you keep the building insured, for obvious reasons. I don't see how compulsory insurance on homes owned outright could be enforced though.
Yeah if there is a mortgage on a building then they are gonna want some insurance.
I doubt they could enforce a law requiring it if the building was owned outright BUT - it would still be foolish to NOT carry insurance. We always think nothing will ever happen to us but then disaster strikes with NO warning.
I do not own the house I live in but if I did own a house, for sure i would keep insurance.

When I did own a house I insured it, not only because it was a requirement of the mortgage but also because although I reckon most (if not all) insurance companies are total ripoff merchants, insurance is just sensible.
Now I'm renting I have contents insurance but my landlord isn't that intelligent: he let the building insurance lapse (in a high bushfire risk area) and has now delayed essentia repairs after a small kitchen fire for months because he's going to have to pay for them himself.
I also have funeral insurance, pet medical insurance and fire, theft and third party property damage insurance on my car. In Australia personal injury third party insurance is compulsory to pay with your car rego.
I'm confused. Are you bothered by the smoke or the fact that people didn't pay fire insurance for those homes?
