People walking around with their mouth open

It really irks me when people walk around with their mouth hanging open. Like they are trying to catch a fly...It makes them look dull if not retarded. Is there some physical reason reason a person would do this like weak jaw muscles? I don't think it's a coincidence that these people are often not that bright.

If you have observed they are often not very bright, you must know quite a few such people to have discovered their level of intelligence. So why not just ask one "hey, just curious, why do you walk with your mouth open?"

    • Cause that's kind of rude

But going around asking people behind their backs if they are retarded is polite? Personally I would find that a lot more offensive than if you asked me a question. I don't find the question offensive at all, you don't have to imply that you think anything bad about it when you ask. Becides, the very rude and offensive way that you talk about them indicates yoi don't care much about them anyway, so it should follow you care just as little about their feelings.

How can you tell someone's intelligence by seeing them walk by? You must be an amazingly talented person.
There are plenty of physical reasons why a person would be breathing through their mouth and not their nose, causing them to walk around with their mouth open. But I guess your talent doesn't extend to being able to use Google and read about it on the web.

    • Well they could. Eva genius but doing this makes them look dumb. I don't think it helps on a job interview to have a vacant open mouth expression.

i understand your irritation about expressions people make! I have my mouth open when jogging to get oxygen! I hate when people squint from the sun or not wearing their glasses, it looks very ugly!

  • Thanks for bringing this up, really. Recently I've been considering the old stereotype of the "dim little mouth-breather" and to be honest, I just can't make sense of it. Why would someone who prefers to breath from their mouth thus be unintelligent? Where's the correlation?

I prefer to breath in this fashion - not slack-jawed, but simply with lips parted. This is because, for whatever reason, it seems like I can never take in air fast enough through my nose. Now you know. By the way, I am considered intelligent.

You know that big Jewish nose of yours can handle the job.

      • You have been reported to the SPLC, who will soon bring you to trial on hate speech charges.

Think twice before hurting the feelings of the chosen people.

It is believed that people who are unintelligent would be doing more physical tasks, and so would be breathing heavier and have their mouth open. Eventually they just get used to keeping their mouth open, and keep it open all the time.

Mhm. Weather or not it's true that's the reasoning behind it.

Interesting. A lot of Down's syndrome people have oversize tongues and probably can't close their mouths properly.

    • I'm actually talking about people whose mouths are hanging way open like a cod fish. And have the same a ant staring expression. I doubt this description fits you.

Born premature and my nostrils arevery narrow, surgery helped but after almost 15+ years of mouth breathing I got into the habit and have to remember to breathe through my nose.

Whenever I'm around others I make an effort to nose breathe, but it isn't the same and feels restrictive.

I'm not stupid however, but I'm betting you'd still call me that behind my back if I ever passed you on the street huh?

The only times I breathe through my mouth is when I have a cold and my nose is blocked which isn't often as I rarely get sick which is a good thing I guess.
