People who would receive honorary degrees should pay honorary tuition

So many people can't even afford a degree they actually have to work for - either in terms of tuition fees, or in terms of the time they're not able to do paid work because they're studying.

To get far enough in life that you're being awarded a degree for having done great things (and you're well-known enough for a university to notice you), you must surely be able to afford to stump some poor kid up a few thousand so that they can at least work for what you got for free. I mean, maybe some people who are that highly renowned are broke, but surely most can't be too poor to even make a symbolic gesture.

It shouldn't be enforced by law; it should just be something people do, like tipping waiters.

    I think they shouldn't even give out honorary degrees. Taylor Swift has a doctorate degree now and is legally allowed to call herself Dr. Swift, she never even went to college, it's sickening.

    If ever I were to receive an honorary degree I would very much like to be able afford to grant a much deserving student a scholarship! If I was a rich, and famous person I would want to give someone a full scholarship!

    They do. They pay the amount it costs to get the honorary degree. Exactly nothing.

      Exactly. An honorary degree doesnt have weight behind it. You wouldnt trust someone in a field if they only have an honorary degree in it.

      I would take it if there was literally no other person with a qualification as the honorary degree might convey some natural talent at said degree.

      Tbf, people who receive honorary degrees don't tend to be young people. It's young people who need to work for them but can't afford to pay.

    They can do absolutely nothing with the degrees except displaying it somewhere. It's not as if they could steal our jobs with these.

      Can I have my green card yet? Like, how many more hoops do non-rich, non-special, poor-ish 'hoi-polloi' worker types need to jump through just to earn a viable living (i.e. a living that will pay for nutritious food, safe, salubrious housing and treatment for whatever medical accident might happen to them)? It's getting that way in my country too though, so I guess I can't really talk.
