Person suffering from an intellectual disability or asshole?

So I have this freind I feel might have a intellectual disability. They are sometimes hard to explain things to. Sometimes I gone so far as to draw them a picture and they can not decipher the picture. I drew this picture for others and they understood very clearly. So it's not that I am just a terrible artist. This person also seems to make a lot of rude statements but I wondering if it's just because they are mentally slow. Now they have done this to strangers as well. They will make statements based on apperence. Like "oh you must hate basketball. I mean look how short you are ya can't even reach the hoop". Than continue the conversation on this assertion without fact checking what they are saying. Than the person can explain they use to play sports in HS. The person will continue to assert as if the original idea was the case. "Oh you mean like little league right? Or like you mean you were a referee?". They also done this with people who expressed like "Oh ya I have a landscaping job" or "I work in business" and made belittling remarks with that knowledge being already known or common knowledge among peers. Like I wondering if they are retarded in which case I need to start speaking to them in a manner they can understand better. They also done stuff where they started acting like they were high off stuff that shouldn't be getting you high. Should I give them the benifit of possible intellectual disability or should I alert them that they are in fact being a gigantic asshole

Oh they can be both, well and truly.

I just try to distinguish between what asshatery is the condition and what is genuine.

It's really hard to be sure what's going on with the dude. The world is full of stupid people, and there are also a lot of people who have very poor social skills and are generally oblivious to how they come across to others.

    But there are other possibilities.

If you've spent any time with young children, you must have noticed that, for some kids, any attention is good. So they'll act up or be rude or throw a temper tantrum over something they must know on some level is really stupid, just to get a rise out of their parents or other adults. It's possible the dude is still stuck at that four-year-old stage of emotional development; he knows perfectly well that he's talking crap that might annoy the other person, but that's fine, because he'll be the focus of their attention for a while. Him supposedly getting high off of something that you know is non-intoxicating also sounds very much like attention-seeking.

Related to this is the fact that some people are drama addicts. They just can't help stirring the shit and trying to rile people up, ideally when there are others there to spectate.

Whatever the reasons for the guy behaving as he does, in functional terms he's a dickhead, and life is too short to spend it in the company of such people if they can possibly be avoided. It seems to me that unless you have some sort of emotional investment in this dude and you really want/need to be buds with him, it's not your place to educate him on how his behaviour is received. In any case, the impression I get from how you sketch him is that he probably wouldn't accept your judgement well, and it most likely wouldn't change anything. I suggest you deal with him as best you can when you have to, avoid him as much as possible for all the rest of the time, and let the twat figure out things for himself.

Sounds like he's just being rude but I cant know the root of the problem without knowing him. It could go both ways. But he's probably more of a dick than slow.

    • What would motivate a person to go out of thier way to do this though? They seem to do this randomly out of no where. I just like thinking "you can't possibly think this is okay?"
