Piety and prejudice . . .is it maybe time for a new form of religion?

Greetings, as anyone with a subscription to this site and a itchy typing finger knows, if there's anything that starts a debate around here its religion, Thanks in part to the Jihad/War on Terror , and the rapid advances in science in the last century many are asking wether religion has any place in the modern world

As cross -over between someone who was heavily influenced by religion as a child and someone who is a firm believer in science and what it can do for us, aswell as someone who has a good grasp on cultural dynamics I need a few of you to help me answer these pressing questions

How do we know that those people who wrote down those text weren't heavily influenced by the culture they where born in? The lunar symbol of Islam, an old religious symbol dating back to the days of mankinds first cities in the area, clearly indicate that the faith adopted many cultural practices in the area already, Ramadan the month of fasting is thousands of years old, the practice of women wearing veils , polygamy, marriage of adults to children , stoning - all those practices are merely in the holy text because they were followed by the people who lived there at the time, if the Bible, Tora, Koran was written by the native Americans or the Khoisan in Africa there would probably have been parts about saying a prayer of thanks before you killed an animal

How do we know that the "Give to the emperor what is owed to him" part of the bible wasn't put in by the Romans so the Celts would have to pay there taxes, and homosexual sex and relationships, its already been scientifically proven that no one "Chooses" to be gay- they just are and yet modern Christians and Muslims judge them because of how their ancestors felt about the matter 2000 years ago,the 6 day creation story was originally copied from the Egyptians when the Israelites where slave workers there

What i'm coming down to- is that don't you think its time that humanity ounce and for all cast of the shackle of our ancestors primitive beliefs, and embrace our faiths with modern scientific explanations, to stop teaching our kids the 6 day creation story in sunday school, to admit that our holy texts may be flawed and get rid of those parts that have no bearing on our modern knowledge of the universe?

Yes , the holy tects are flawed and outdated 10
No, The word of God is prefect and eternal 9
Who cares, i dont believe in it anyhow 13

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Yet his shadow still looms. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?"

    ~Friedrich Nietzsche

I thank you for using this oft-out of context quote in its entirety

I believe it's time to end religion all together. It just doesn't add much good to humanity and more people have been killed in the name of one religion or another than by any other cause. We need to move on as a species.

  • You can if want to, I'm quite comfortable with being a believer.

I voted huh because why is what we need a religion? We need answers. That's why there have been no new world-sweeping religions really created lately, what has been created is a blend of all. From what I can see, there are both good and bad effects of religion. I don't necessarily think having one will have more good effects than bad, though--there is no one size fits all truth out there, not one that covers sufficient ground for most people.

On the contrary, we can be 100% certain that they *were* influenced by the culture they lived in. Everything is effected by the culture it was born into.

Out of interest, how is it "scientifically proven that no one "Chooses" to be gay"? I agree that people don't choose their sexuality, but how is it "scientifically proven"?

I agree that society is not served well by much of the dogma in religion.
