If you gave her that name and she ever visited France, people might wonder why her parents felt the need to thank some woman named Amelia.

Some stupid parents burden their kids with truly awful names in an attempt to make them different. At least this isn't one of those.

And some parents give their children these weird names that are more likely to be susceptible to bullying, more to the point when the children grow up they are more likely to hate their name and change it.

Especially if its ebonics. No spelling a name uniquely will not determine if the child is unique. It's what the child does when they become an adult that will make them unique or not.

For e.g. I distinctively remember reading a news article where a woman names their child Midnight and as soon as I saw that I was like " Hopefully it isn't a joke ".

I bet when that child is grown up they're probably gonna be bullied for it and would likely change it.

I definitely would not name a child midnight. I personally thing that is more extreme than Merci.

Isn't it the most common surnames?

The most common first name is Muhammad because Islam isnt that creative with names. The bible? That's the source of practically every english name in a nutshell.

The surname is not my issue, just the first name. I just typed out the whole thing so you can see how it all flows together.

It's a pretty normal name. I also love the name Amelia. Personally that would be a better first name, but of course it's not my child, so name them whatever your heart desires.

In all honesty when I clicked on this I wasn't expecting much. Thought the name was going to be incredibly weird like when parents name their kids after a tool. I know a guy name "Socket". I'm sure he wishes his name was John.

Socket is very bad. I feel sorry for that person. I appreciate your input though. I personally really like Amelia myself.

Merci means thank you in French and it sounds really bizarre. But this is because I speak French and I'm not used to people being called this.
And why do you guys have middle names? What is the purpose of a middle name?
It's a real question, not mocking.

Middle names can sometimes be used to remember someone in the family, for example I have my grandmothers first name, Agnes, as my middle name. In some Asian countries a middle name serves as their English name. Then you also just have middle names which have no other purpose other than being a middle name.

That's a nice way to honour someone you love.

is it your child??? if not the decision is not yours, why do everyone always try to dictate to others what to do?

That's like, every name in existence, though. They're all based off of something from some language. It's actually a modern thing to name a child a name purely because the name sounds nice.

It's a decent enough name. Hopefully, she will like it to and not do as I did with mine, hate it so much I changed it.

I like it! It’s hard to adjust to any name. I always called my children “the baby” for the first couple months. My newest addition will be Malcolm Owen. I’m not a massive fan of Malcolm for a baby, so I’ll just call him Mac.

As far as I know, Merci is short for Mercedes. So why not name the child the proper name, and then call her Merci. Mercedes Amalia has a ring to it, but I don’t think it goes with Smith.

Yes I agree with not. I’m also not too fond of overly long names or car names. I don’t think he intended for it to be short for Mercedes’ it’s just his preferred way of spelling Mercy.
