I’m going to assume millennial.. or baby boomer either one is blamed for everything. Millennials kinda had this one coming though. Just look at the generation Z. More proactive less in debt and more self starters, best of all not crybabies.

The debt thing is probably exclusive to the US, I'm a Millennial and I don't have any debts, most of my friends don't have any debts. Where as Gen Z expect to just get into the tech market and magically transform into super hackers and be the next Mark Zuckerberg, or Bill Gates and set themselves up for life. And when life gives them a big middle finger, they fall down harder even than the worst of the Millennials.
I'm one of those Millennials that worked to get what they have and will continue surging forwards, cause I know I can do better.

it depends on who you ask, its all very arbitrary, I just recently saw a so called " generation theory expert" who claimed "generation z is worse than the millennials." i think 80% of it is all hogwash, just the old and jealous shitting on the young, it happens to every generation.

The debt this definitely isn't exclusive to the US sadly :/
After the global economic crisis around 2008 a lot of countries suffered, and because of a lot of political upheaval from brexit and huge, sudden increases in student loans, the UK is really suffering too.

        • LloydAsher

Student debt is kinda a US problem because the democratic establishment wanted to pay for underprivileged classes schooling, so the schools and colleges increased the price so the government needs to fork over more etc and that’s how we are here in this predicament.

That’s an interesting theory considering tuition prices didn’t really skyrocket until the economy crashed and state governments were forced to give less money to schools, which meant they had to charge students more to make up for it.

Even so, most developed countries help students pay for school. The difference for many of them is that the government caps tuition just like they control health care prices. But certain US politicians love capitalism and the so called free market(most of them are in one party and it’s not the Democrats) and the result is paying twice the price for an inferior education and subpar health care.

"Just look at the generation Z. More proactive less in debt and more self starters, best of all not crybabies"

Joking, right? This poll is a little inaccurate, Gen Z starts around the mid 90's, making the oldest "Zoomers" about 23. Unless they have some magic way of eliminating college debt and increasing wages, don't really know what you're talking about. Crybabies? Watch these kids overanalyze Seinfeld.

Guess how old they are? Guess what generation they belong to? Not to mention on the other side of the spectrum there's the "I've grown up my ENTIRE life on social media so I'm completely socially inept" incels who expect women just have sex with them on a whim.

What makes you think they are there, or in general?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • As I said before, there are numerous opinions regarding this, its ambiguous. Imagine a person born in 1980 and 1981, a difference in 1 year changing their whole generation lol. You are free to chose who you want to belong with. But however the 20 year range assumption starting from 1 AD is the most accepted besides the famous Strauss–Howe generational theory. And i agree, as per studies generation z may indeed be the most conservative generation since "the missionary generation (born 1861 to 1880)".

But yeah this is associated with boomers and early gen x too, some born between 1950-1969 like to be identified as "Generation Jones". There are many different classifications but the main one I stated at the poll is perhaps the most widely accepted one.

I'm a Millennial, but I'm hardly what everyone else thinks of a Millennial. I hate the whole Millennial stereotype... A whiny, sexually confused wimp that bitches about everything and does nothing about it. I'm not whiny, I'm straight, I don't expect things to be given to me on a silver platter, I've worked for everything I have and will soldier on, cause I can do better.
To those who say "You can't do shit, cause you're a Millennial", I say, where were you at the age of 26? I got my degree, a good job as a car salesman, my own business, a 4 car garage and can spend 2.7 grand on a vacation for me, my girlfriend and my parents in Greece in the summer.
Not saying all of us are great, I know many Millennials who are terrible at life, I know many Gen-X-ers that suck at it... Don't put everyone under one dumb label.
The pot smoking, live in their parents basement, blame the government for everything types are not the people who represent my generation.

    • True to that, generalization is extremely stupid, the stereotypical assumption that millennial are lazy obese technology addicts doesn't apply to all. hey completely ignore great millennial sport stars like Roger Federer, Lionel Messi ,Usain Bolt and more and than over half the current sports demographics is taken be millennial. Researches also shows millennial are the most physically active generation as er a 2017 survey, even more so than the succeeding gen, gen z [[www.salon.com/2018/06/10/why-millennials-are-more-fit-than-any-other-generation/]]. I am guessing its jealousy within Boomers and Xers that millennial are taking over their place. Not to mention mellinials make up most of todays working class and their money is used as social security tax for Boomers. But every generation had its share of criticism at a certain point, the statement "each generation is worse than the last" existed since the 19th Century. My point is there are millennials are lazy, unproductive and do not contribute and deserves criticism. But they certainly do not represent all millennial, there are millennial who are hard working, productive and have made significant contribution. Each generation has bad and good, but the millennial generation came about a time when the internet is at its highest and is a tool to spread fast propaganda and criticisms; that weren't as easy to spread in the case f older generations. Either ways anyone with intelligence knows that generalization is plane stupid and no intelligent person regardless of their generation would do that.

They also prominently participated in the Tompkins Square riot in 1874 and helped tackle unemployment crisis. A very impressive resume for their generation, as with all the generations between 1742 to 1924 who were among the best ever to have lived and have contributed most to build the world. They endured times of hardship and worked to make the world a better place for future generations, that is us.

    • Like I said there are many different opinions on this matter, yes the 1946-1964 range is mostly used due to the post WW2 baby boom, literally where the terminology comes from, just like Greatest Greatest is extended form 1900-1924 to describe the generation of WW2 participants. Thats why it is claimed US didnt have a President from Silent Generation as Bush Sr was born in 1924 and a WW2 veteran. But this list too is widely accepted because of its basis on traits and the environment they grew up. Prior to the lost generation , which is absurdly dated "1883 to 1900" just to include mainly the WW1 generation and then Greatest Generation extended "1901-1824" it was widely accepted that since 1 AD generations were classified within a 20 year time frame, say 1 AD to 20 AD and so on. That is all based on Strauss–Howe generational theory, which starts with the Reformation Generation (born 1483–1511) , these classifications are all based on events. But based on traits, personality and stuffs the list I gave is has one of the most widely accepted time frame.

        • That was "a baby boom", not the only "baby boom". Baby booms have happened before, in the past due to diseases like small pox, tetanus, tb, malaria, cholera, plague, etc which were at the time incurable, mortality was so high that despite high birth rates, they did not offset death rates and hence population was under control. Things changed due to raid medical advancement in the 20th C, and birth rates exceeds death rates by a wide margin, world population grew from barely 1 billion in 1900 to 6 billion in 2000, and now is near 8 billion. The 1980s also saw a huge baby boom, that is why millennial are referred to as the next baby boomers, or echo boomers often times. Regardless Strauss–Howe classifies it "1943–1960" , and even if we take 1946-1960, the huge population control campaigns that were undertaken in the 60s and 70s, that have sadly been abandoned around the 1980s sadly. My main point is the WW2 baby boomers generation do not stretch beyond 1960, and there have been baby booms on other periods, including the 1980s.

While generational thinking can be helpful in some respect, it feels as though its a rather artificial construct designed to separate us even further. An abstraction, lense,or filter that really clouds and clumps reality into the simple to digest but unfortunately commonly fulfilling soundbite for people to clench onto in attempts to understand our complex word in a simple way, yet in return it becomes distorted and IMO a mostly un-useful wide eye'd view of reality. At the end of the day, although babies born in different era's do grow up in different worlds, there really is no cut off date or magical switch that changes the people and the idea of putting a date on such an undefinable thing seems poetic at best but hardly useful.

Just as a globe of the earth is equally correct if you flip it what we would see as "upside-down", we just decide a way to be correct, people fearing the ambiguous and needing an answer. but it the great scene of the cosmos, the earth has no proper orientation and the people living on it have such desire to define everything, to name everything, to classify everything, ect.. when at the end of the day, it's just a shit load of people often dealing with similar struggles and emotional outrage as people of the past but just through new ways and different more sometimes more visible mediums.

" Often, things that exist in the world from your birth and through childhood is a natural part of the world, things introduced to the world when you are a young to mid-aged adult is new and exciting, and things introduced after that is against the natural way of the world"

that quote obviously doesn't always hold true and isn't completely relevant, but I feel it draws some parallels into generational thinking and to why if you do extensive research into writings about previous generations even before the boomers, you see A LOT of the same terrible things said about the young people of that day, much like you hear about the millennials today or the boomers in their day. Makes you wonder, could it be that the old just don't understand the young? or That tradition is always dying and reshaping leaving hard ache in those who cherished it? or that young people have always been "crazy" in some sort of way while they journey through their early development? . the answer is yes, and we'll continue to go through he saga of "young people today .. followed by negative remark" forever so long as people keep allowing generational thinking to take any kind of center stage in framing their world

----p.s. this isn't any kind of attack on you, just sharing my thoughts

        • Thanks for the well thought and informative rely, and I agree with what you said I stated previously, since the 19th C , there is a saying "each generation is worse than the last"', it is evident from history and literature it is a fact that previous generations saw younger generations inferior to them. Is tat fact or opinion? I dont know, I am no one to judge, but the contrition of each generation in shaping the world. Newtonian mechanics developed in the 17th and 18h C Newton himself, although we know hey do not apply for objects travelling a he seed of light, they are pivotal for basic mechanisms of physical objects, and without understanding his laws it would no have been possible for Sputnik or Apollo to escape Earth's gravitational pull and pave away for space ravel 200 years after his death, but at the same time we cannot use one person to judge all people of a time (though the 17th C-20th C was the golden age of Scientific advancement and many other great scientists made their contribution at this period, great scientists like Copernicus and Galileo were there earlier but it was i Newton's time science was revolutionized) , the 17th C was a period of immense warfare and chaos, the 30 years war the deadliest religious war in history (an intersect war between Catholics and Protestants at the height of papacy era) had claimed the lives of 15 million, which is almost similar to WW1 but astonishing given the low population of barely half a billion of the world then. They were uneducated cults sacrificing anything for the sake of their religion but led to the downfall of papacy and age of reformation . Imagine if nuclear weapon were discovered in the 1600s, the world would have been destroyed and we would never even be born today.

Almost 400 years later modern day Christians are among the most peaceful people there are and people do not even want to believe the violence they had been involved in since the days of Constantine in the ancient age. What we should take notes of is the good things done by previous generations and take the progress further (whats next after manned mission to the Moon? manned mission to Mars) and avoid the mistakes of the past generation and teach the future generation to do so. Instead of criticizing the future generations, our responsibility should be to teach them to make the world a better place, and their duty is to learn form older generations and not act like "know it all arrogant fools who in reality are ignorant and know nothing", not saying they do just a belief by most older gens, especially the Boomers, it is fault of both the past generation to be prejudice against the younger generations sand the younger generations to think they are smarter than previous generations wen they live their lives with the contributions made by past generations. The older and younger generations must work together to build a better world......
