Pride in nationality vs. pride in race

It's generally accepted when people are proud of the country they're from. Yet it's often frowned upon when people are proud of the racial heritage they have. Isn't this hypocritical?

I can understand pride in one's country - Many countries, while having a bloody history, did survive many catastrophes and hardships to get to where they are the innate philosophy of a country can be a source of pride to someone that shares that philosophy.

However, pride in one's race makes little sense to me, logically. Race is basically the most easily identifiable collection of characteristics developed by evolutionary adaptation to the environments of earlier human beings.

You can take 10 random Asians, or White people of Black people, put them in the same room and chances are great that all 10 of them will have wildly different blood heritages, physical and genetic characteristics with only the slightest noticeable variation from those of other races. Not to say that there are no differences, my medical knowledge isn't ENTIRELY uninformed, just not enough to say that those two people aren't basically the same human. If you are talking about the White race, Black race or Hispanic race, you are in no way talking about a homogeneous group.

Heritage, on the other hand, is a different story. I can understand pride in heritage. I have a very strong Irish-English heritage, an ancestor that was martyred in the name of his religion and many more that made sacrifices for causes greater than themselves. Many of my ancestors served in the military and my bloodline is full of hard working men and women. I am especially proud of my matriarchal heritage, as far as I know, most of the women in my ancestry were much more than dainty, simple housewives and were known for their strength, will-power and work ethic.

Pride in one's heritage is a fantastic thing to have. Your heritage is part of the reason why you are who you are now. I do, somewhat, believe in the archaic concept of honoring one's culture and I truly do believe that if more people in the US had more pride in their heritage, they would have more respect for who they are today and more respect for the sacrifices their ancestors made to ensure that their families continued into the future and MAYBE, just MAYBE, they would be tempted to live lives that would have honored their ancestors and their heritage.

      "I have a very strong Irish-English heritage"

I thought you mainly had German heritage. At least, that's what I thought I read once...

        No.

I might have a few Germans running around in the muck that is the family ooze from which my family tree grows, but so far as I know, it is mainly English-Irish with some Scots.

I can see your point, but a country can - generally speaking - have a certain mentality (that you may like very much), whereas a race is just that: simply a race.

    I frown on all pride.

I don't see anything wrong with either of these. I am proud of my country and I am proud of my race and heritage. In my case it's not exactly the same, since I'm Ukrainian Canadian.

What should be frowned upon and eradicated is hate towards other races, which is nazism.

Again, there's nothing wrong with racial pride, as long as you don't hate anyone else who's proud of their own heritage.

  • I agree, specifically white heterosexual males.

It is ok to take pride in being homosexual, yet homophobic to take pride in being heterosexual.

It is ok to take pride in being black, yet racist to take pride in being white.

It is ok to take pride in being a woman, yet sexist to take pride as a man.

Personally, I am proud to be what I am, a white heterosexual male, I do not care what people say. I am proud to be me.

I'm a white heterosexual male too. Although I'm not in the LEAST ashamed of these things, I also don't really see why I should be proud of it however, because neither one of these things is an actual achievement. They are simply the cards mother nature dealt me. It just is what it is.

However, these things ARE part of my (and your) identity, I can't really deny that...

I find taking pride in anything other than your own thoughts and your own creations to be illogical.

However, people are free to be illogical so long as it doesn't affect anyone else.

I have pride in myself. It doesn't matter.:.the rest of it. It is entirely irrelevant.

All people should love there country. Saying "I only love people of my colour skin and hate all others" is racist.

I don't care what others think. I am a White Nationalist and a British Ultranationalist.

I think both are dumb. Being proud for something you were born a part of makes no sense to me. Be happy with your own achievements, not with those of others.

Its like loving your family. Blood is thicker. If you are born in one area that is where you are from no matter what you do. You will be judged on where you from no matter where you go in the world.

An american can not go any other place in the world without having the stigma that they are American. Just like many Germans are sadly still judged for what Hitler did. Which is very unfair.

Are all Americans stupid no. Do all British have bad teeth no. Are all the french women hairy probobly not. I can also bet you they have some people from japan who are too tall, or some who are just not as smart as the other kids.

We however are forced to live with these stereotypes. When we go to other countries. So why not be proud of where we came from?

Are you saying we should bastardize our own country in hopes of being excepted by another? Well that just makes you wannabe. Something most people should not aim to be yet you probobly have inspired to do a few times am I right?
