Printed books or ebooks?

If you could choose to read the same book (or any longer text) online from a computer screen or printed on paper (e.g. printed book in its classic form), what would you choose?

I would choose it printed on paper (e.g. printed book) 65
No preference, I do not like reading anyway 9
No preference, both are equally good for me 15
I would choose ebook (reading from a computer screen) 7

There's just something unexplainably better about having the printed book, but I do like e-books though. If I were to choose, I say printed book.

  • Looking up things - i prefer the internet. But when it comes to fictional reading much prefer a paper book (Bit off the subject but I laugh at work because my colleagues are in their 40s/50s and are using smart phones to read their work rotas...I'm in my 20s and I'm using pen and paper!)

I would choose eBook as long as it's DRM-free.

I like the concept of the e-book better, but it always seems to be more expensive than the printed version. It's a toss up here.

Hmm, I'm not sure actually. When I've got the printed version, I tend to opt for that. I like holding an actual book with real pages and ink. I do love reading books on my Kindle as well, though. I like that it's easy to highlight and make notes (it's hard and faffy making notes on real books).

I also love that all you have to do is tap a word and you get the definition. That one is very helpful for me. With a printed book, having to go back and forth between the book and a dictionary can be annoying. It's easier to get lost in the book when you don't have to spend all that time dipping in and out of it. Also, I just really like ebooks.

Both are great, in my opinion. Overall, it depends entirely on what I'm in the mood for.

I bet someone is trying to manufacture the old book smell, kind of like that new car smell.

  • My eyes tend to like the paper better. Reading a book on a digital screen kills my eyes after a while (even with screen and font adjustments). But I do read both... the ebook is really nice because it's not like I can just walk into some huge bookstore and find what I need or have it shipped to where I am.

I don't really know. I like the idea of e-books, but I haven't used them enough to form a solid opinion yet. I do like the idea of public domain books though.

I absolutely LOVE regular books. I hope I can get back into reading them regularly again sometime.

I like to read my book printed but I read a lot of fanfictions so I don't have a problem with reading from screen.

I used to be a voracious reader in high school and university but once I left, got caught up with life and simply lost interest.

While I still read on rare occasions, I think both have their merits, but because I'm an older guy, I'll vote for the old technology and say paper. ;)

I like reading online because it's so much easier to look up definitions of words, contrasting opinions, and other such things, so whatever I am reading about tends to stick more based on the amount of 'other' information I can readily get.

Based on text alone I don't think there's a difference but based on what I mentioned I find that reading online has been more influential compared to print.

I bought a Kindle with some trepidation but, pretty soon, I forgot that I wasn't reading a real book. That's the best compliment I can give it. Also, that I haven't bought a real book (apart from books of sheet music) for two years, only books for the Kindle. I'm a convert!

Not all e-books, just the ones published before a certain date. Unless, that is, you do it illegally somehow.

A great many free books available. Many of them are are amazing. Check out Charles Dickens and Samuel Pepys for starters. And Bronte sisters (just off the top of my head....)

Thanks. I am aware of public domain e-books. I think this guy is talking about e-book piracy.
