u really think they/them sounds more odd than "it"? "it" is for objects

      I think it's fair.

Yes. It is not just for objects. It technically works for other stuff to. So you could call your dog or mother it, you just wouldn't.

The correct pronouns would actually be who/whom, since those are the already existing pronouns in reference to singular humans of unknown gender. It/it implies inanimacy.

And they and them implies theres more than one individual. Making it hard to distinguish if there is a group of them which one of them is they.

People aren't "its." That's dehumanizing. They/them is fine and perfectly neutral. Never understood why people are so triggered by other people's gender identity.

Except they aren't. It's not that hard to refer to someone as "they/them" then move on with your life, even if you disagree with them. Not being able to accept a person's differences makes you immature, not them.

I know a couple who used they/them as pronouns and they both stopped because it was confusing for everyone in casual conversations including them. Their friends still respect them- like nobody bats an eye when they wear things that aren't 'for their gender' or calls them 'it' which is obviously like spitting on someone, but to take a word that already has a definition and then turn it into something else while still also using that word for it's original purposes just results in overcomplicating simple conversations. Only people with time on their hands do things like that.

Genuine question: can you give some examples of how it was confusing? Since the definition of they/them already includes a singular form, ie individuals of an unknown gender, that part shouldn’t be confusing. Is it because they were using the same pronouns? I could definitely see how that would be confusing, but I don’t think that should invalid the use of they/them pronouns altogether. It’s no different than a gay couple both using he/him or a lesbian couple using she/her pronouns, any two people who use the same pronouns are going to cause confusion in some situations. Hell I work with three women named Sam, that causes confusion. But that’s their name and we make it work no matter how much time we have on our hands.

Person a was born biologically female and goes by he/him, they/them, she/her in that preferred order. Person b was born biologically male and goes by she/her, they/them, he/him in that preferred order. (I personally went by both of them as they/them so as to not accidentally out the both of them so yes that made a bit of confusion.) They also both changed their names- not legally yet.
They both have family members who our friends and I know personally that don't know they are transgender. We have known this couple for years so it wasn't easy to remember which pronouns to use when and where. They constantly forgot each other's preferred names and pronouns as well. The combination of these things and some other things I might have forgotten to mention made things a bit complicated.
The use of pronouns is supposed to be relatively simple and absent-minded language. They both determined that they found it annoying and tedious to keep up with and didn't care so much about the labels, so even though they both still identify the way they do, they are perfectly happy with whatever they are called as long as everyone they care about understands and respects how they feel.

Well, yeah, anytime somebody goes by a different name or pronouns in different situations, it’s going to be confusing. Couple years ago I was friends with a woman who started dating another woman but hadn’t told some of her family she was bisexual, so we had to make sure we just referred to her girlfriend as her friend around her family. That was confusing too, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t refer to lesbian couples as girlfriends. I knew a guy in school who hated his name because his parents were abusive and his name reminded him of them, so he started going by a different name, but he still has to go by his birth name around his parents to avoid causing causing more problems at home. That was confusing too. The confusion is caused by the circumstances, not by the words themselves.

Where you lose people is when you tell people they have to do something. People just think the whole they and them stuff is silly. Being trans and non binary is fine but dont go up to everyone and start making demands and try to educate them on things they find silly. Youre just not that important.

Trans and non binary people just want to live their lives in peace. And the majority of Americans don’t see anything wrong with that, they’re completely comfortable using they/them pronouns. It’s the bigots and transphobes that lose people by trying to force their views on everybody else and shouting their “opinions” from the rooftops, like anybody cares. Nobody cares if you “disagree” with being trans or non binary(tf does that even mean, anyway? that’s like telling somebody you disagree with them having brown hair), nobody cares if you don’t want to share a bathroom with a trans or non binary person, nobody cares if you don’t want them around children. They have the same rights you do, you can’t stop people from existing just because you’re an emotional snowflake that gets triggered when you see someone that doesn’t look like you. You’re just not that important.

There's no way all these kids woke up one day at the same time and wanted to be "non binary" (be called they and them). If you never teach a kid what non binary is it would be virtually impossible to become non binary because no one even thinks of stuff so stupid on their own

        • LloydAsher

Why should we care if we call people it. Since they already excused themselves from standard pronouns.

You cant expect people who have no intrest or care in transgenderism to take an extra step just because it's the "nice thing" to do.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • In my country our version of they/them is a lot better but people still find it stupid that anyone wants to be called something between genders.
In my opinion you must think pretty low of yourself if you want to be referred to as an it or a they. Like you're not really a person.

Curious. What do you think if someone goes "Oh shit, someone lost their wallet"?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • "They" implies 2 or more. So it wouldn't make sense to use it for Non-Binary people.

Because they want their own special little bullshit nomenclature to go along with their "special" case of mental illness.

I'm not going to use any of it. You want me to use Ze and Zer you get identified as an asshat.

He doesnt. He thinks a severe mental illness should be taken care of through the mind rather than the body. Hes a nice guy though so if a transgendered person gets into a car crash he will still try to save them. Because they are a person and he is a doctor.

I was going to point out the irony of a Trump supporter calling other people a cult, but this one is so much better.

          “Because they are a person…”

They are a person. They, a person

See how easy that was? You’re already aware of the singular they/them. You use it without even realizing it and nobody bats an eye.

  • miss_jass06

"It" just sounds rude and I think most people would agree on that. I don't get what problem people have with using others' preferred pronouns. I don't care and just call them as they wanna be called, cause it's none of my business why they chose it.

  • darefu

The human body is an 'It'. Wait until legal issues get involved.

You can punch, assault, rape, stab and shoot 'it'. Unless there is more than a single individual involved it will be hard to use they. 'Them' is a possibility depending on how it's phrased but choice may just be a name or the body.

Bro, let's just set up an scenario here real quick. Imagine. You are in your classroom alone because the ring just went off and it's break time okay. You are going out the classroom and on the hallway you find someone's keys. You don't who lost them, what would you say??

"Oh, someone lost THEIR keys, THEY must be really worried"

See??? People already use they/them as singular pronouns. It has been like this for a long time now, when u don't know someone's gender you use they/them as singular. Is grammatically correct! + Languages evolve!! Do you think you talk the same way people talked english 300 years ago??

Just respect people's pronouns, is not difficult and it can make a big difference in someone else's life.

(On a side note there are some people who also use it/its as pronouns, everyone just has different set of pronouns)

I personally use all pronouns bc i don't give a shit what u call me so :]
    Hope this helped
