Punishing the cats....

For behavior training, I use a water bottle. On an adult cat, I practice corporal cuddling.

I used a spray bottle filled with water. My cat kept taking dumps in the closet. So I would spray her.

I have no idea how to punish a cat. My neighbor has about 7 and every time I try to strike fear into one it just looks at me like, "What is he doing?".

That's not to say I am malevolent towards cats but it's funny seeing their reactions at times. And I imagine it's funny for them to see my neighbor's reaction when she catches me teasing her kittens!

Putting hats on cats would be kinda funny, but they probably don't like it lol. And none of those are proper discipline. Use the squirt bottle when they're doing something they're not supposed to. Withholding food or letting kids maul them is just cruel.

Spray bottles are good, a squirt gun without too much oomph to it works well too. Also you can try something that would make a loud noise, the trick is to startle them at the moment of misbehavior so they associate the negative behavior with the unpleasant thing.

If you're having scratching or litterbox problems, there's some pheremone stuff you can get for your living area that's supposed to make cats feel safer and discourage marking behavior.

It's hard to punish a cat, because most of the time they just don't get it. What I've read everywhere is it's easier to reward positive behavior than punish negative behavior, but I know I've had to lay down the law a bit with mine. I'm gonna need a whole new matress, pillow and sheet set when I move, and that's just the biggest thing he ruined with pee.

OK cats are extremely strange animals. The ONLY effective way to punish a cat is to withhold attention. But make sure the cat sees the connection between it's behavior and yours (their attention span is about 2 seconds). Otherwise he'll just think you're a dick.

Pee on them.

Throw them in the dryer.

Shave it and glue feathers on it.

First of all, you can't expect a cat to become as deciplined as a dog for example! Cats live their own way, they're difficult to train, for a reason!

But if there is a certain behavior you wanna control in your cat, like not getting on table tops or scratching the sofa, the only way to make it clear to them is to punish them Right Away they do the act. Not 5, 10 minutes later (or whatever time it takes you to summon a fart!). Just a clear assertive No with a soft slap on the back should be enough, repeated several times they shall get the message.

Alright there is actually a way to train out bad behavior. However you have to do it correctly for it to stick. Dont put it in an area with irresponsible children its going to hurt the kids and they'll possibly hurt the cat. If the children are all bloody, the cat has broken limbs and than is put down for violence its not really a punishment its simply abuse on all ends and its going to be your fault. If you want them to stop grab them by the scruff and than cuddle them. Thats what the mothers do with cats.

Learn to purr like a cat does. I always purr when my cat uses her scratching post, and when she shows affection. My cat will do anything to please me.

Scolding only makes it more tempting to misbehave again.

The best method according to cat behaviorists is to ignore them for a brief period of time. Cats tend to want to please their owners, and if they're being ignored when they want attention they'll feel awful.

If that doesn't work, the next approach should be the water bottle.

Don't overdo the water bottle or loud noises, it can cause a cat to become skiddish.

Water spray.

Farting on them would probably work, well not me doing it, since it would probably kill the cats as I have very bad gas. But a normal sized person doing it should work.

You chose to have the cat. You kept the cat. You made the choice so its your responsibility to house them. Also animals minds work different then humans. They will not get your threats.

"treat me with the proper respect" ... Animals do not have the mind to know what that means.
