The greys will always win. They compete better for resources and also carry a virus which they're immune to and reds are not. Without human intervention, red squirrels would likely be extinct in my country (as it is, they're critically endangered).
The greys were only introduced here a century or so ago. It shows what responsibility humans should consider when doing something as innocuous as releasing a few grey squirrels in parks because they look cute.
Greys unfortunately would win... They can eat the immature hazelnuts whereas reds have to wait, so they have a disadvantage from the outset.
Greys out compete reds so we have to step in to try to keep greys out of red turf to keep their dwindling numbers from crashing.
Also, if it were a one on one fight - I'd suspect the larger grey would be more likely to win.
As much as I would prefer the red I think grey would win.
Grey squirrels definitely would win. They're bigger in size and they carry diseases that harm Reds.
In the UK, I believe they've become endangered because the Greys came over from foreign countries and messed their lives up!
Reds are some much nicer and majestic looking though.
