Schools need to do more

Schools are not doing enough, I left school not knowing how taxes work, how to look for work, how to build a cv, basically, I left high school without knowing in the slightest how the world works, I could tell you all the intricate details and beliefs of the native Indian tribes, I could tell you the medical and scientific beliefs of the ancient Greeks but I couldn't for the life of me tell you the best format for a CV, how to buy or rent a house or have any interview skills, school taught me no life skills.

Also I keep learning of things from our recent history and wonder how it wasn't taught at school, obviously despite knowing about it we weren't taught anything about racial segregation in america, I've only just heard of the Bosnian war by playing GTA 4, how can a war from as recent as 1992 not be even briefly taught at schools

Schools need to do better to teach us our recent history and the things that shaped our current world, they need to do a better job to prepare us for the real world once we leave school, once I left I felt like I'd been dumped out in the big wide world with no preparation, and felt like despite my hard work the school curriculum and priorities had failed me

Did this really need to be posted again in less than 24 hours?

  • I haven't lived very long, but I've lived long enough to notice that the people who bullshit the most and are good at it tend to go farther than the ones who can't.

Something which isn't taught in school at all.

      is yall sure?

schools teach kids how to navigate a mindless useless bureaucracy filled with unreasonable commies power hungry administrative drones and illogical zero tolerance policies

any kid what can deal with and even beat that system is ready to deal with and deal out all the bullshit in the world

pythagoras theorem is infinitely more useful on a day to day basis than ancient greek philosophy. bad example.

Since leaving school 16 years ago, I've never in my life had to do a Pythagoras Theorem. My example stands.

Why would you expect a public babysitting system to give you a good education?
They gave you what you need, if you bothered to learn the lesson; how to learn.
Wishing for anything more from a country that is intentionally dumbing down the population in order to make them easier to control, is just wasting your time.

I assume you & others are describing the US education system? It doesn't sound too different from the Australian one: I learnt nothing about our Indigenous people at school, and certainly nothing practical to deal with the world, but the I left at 15 to go to work.

I've learned heaps since but mainly from books.

Yeah, it's not our job to teach you how to be an adult. How the fuck can you expect to understand taxes and such if you think school is such crap that you don't take the lessons seriously and never learn the math skills to do your own calculations or reading comprehension skills to understand the fine print?

Quit acting like learning can only take place in schools and that you're helpless to teach yourself or seek education from other sources. You know how difficult it is to deal with having to tame students long enough to listen and then getting homework assignments that you worked hours to plan come back with zeros because kids think that not enjoying something means that it's not worth doing? That it's our job to teach, motivate and discipline you all on our own with little to no parental support or cooperation from students?

If parents only task is to feed and clothe you and we have to teach you everything else then we would expect you to take it seriously and quit acting like something isn't worth learning because you don't see the immediate benefit. But you're not going to do it because it's not exactly what you want to do.

Grades 1-12 teach basic academic skills and topics. They can't cover everything, or people would probably bitch about them trying to cover a little bit of everything and not going into enough detail in more areas.

Real life skills are learned in real life. If you're in the US, the 1040 short form is so easy that most 15 year olds could figure it out. There are countless free internet sites to help with CVs. Spend less time gaming and more time learning these skills from others or from internet resources. You'll be better off by taking on more responsibility for your own learning and wasting less time on blaming others for your areas of weakness.

The history that is taught here in the US is a white washed version to make it seem like the good guys live here and the bad guys are out there. That being said I do agree and I beleive the school system needs an overhaul. We're not taught to think independently or outside the box. Were just taught to follow rules and be programed. That being said I can appreciate the freedom and privleges I get, such as posting an opinion like this publicly. You just have to think for yourself and learn as you go you'll be fine. Good luck.

Schools don't teach you information, they teach you how to learn.

All those things should NOT be taught it school.
In school you should only get information, not how to do stuff.
