Screaming baby bird

Hi it's me again, this morning I went outside to see the 2 magpie parents dead on the road, and the baby girl magpie was in my backyard screaming. She is really small so I picked her up and took her in my house she keeps screaming I've named her Maggy. Does anyone know what they eat? She's my daughter now. I think she has a brother because I saw him a few times but I don't know where he went.

Milk mixed with raw egg is easiest.

    • The males have all white behind their neck while the females only have grey

Isn't that when they're close to adulthood?

If you don't know how to care for it without asking this forum, hand it over to someone who does before it dies of starvation, which is probably why it's screaming

    • I live in a rural place on a farm and there's no vet center or animal center anywhere. I fed Maggy some mince meat and she is quiet now.

Is this an Australian magpie? If so, you're letting yourself in for at least a year of hand feeding finely chopped mince: I've seen year old adults still screaming at their parents to be fed.

I assume you've googled to find out what her diet should be? Minced meat sounds fine but you may need to add other things to it if she's to be healthy

        • Yep it is, and I don't really mind, a few years back some kids were messing about and knocked down a swallows nest, unfortunately one died so I had to raise the other two myself.

Yeah, I found some good recipes to feed magpies, I'll probably stick to feeding her mince meat/insectivore mix/and rice or grains.

Good onya, keep up the good work! I love magpies except when they swoop me and love it when i wake up early enough to hear them carolling just before sunrise, as I did this morning. What I can't work out about them is that they're intelligent birds but they swoop my dog when they're nesting and she can't climb trees to get their eggs or babies! Neither could I for that matter but I understand they see all humans as potential nest robbers, but why dogs? Do they also swoop cows, horses, etc? Just wondering....
