Self-destruction mode? literally!

So, I just wanted to ask, does anyone else feel like their life is sometimes set on Self-Destruction mode? No, for real!

To sum it up, I have a LOT of terribly bad habits I just can't seem to control very well and they've been there since FOREVER. I've never been diagnosed with anything (except by myself)so I'd like to see just how many of you have some (if any) of the same bad habits I do. (I'm an 18 y/o lady)

The most bothersome (but not limited to) are:
-Pulling out my own eyelashes and eyebrows (trichotillomania)
-Picking at, biting and ripping of skin on various places like around nails, under toes, around knuckles(dermatillomania)
-*whisper* Picking my nose... *whisper*
-Biting my nails
-Cracking my knuckles
-Biting the taste-buds of my tongue till it gets all raw and sometimes bleeds(gross but actually not that painful though)
-Chew my lips and inside my cheeks
-Sometimes cause small, shallow scratches on my skin with a sharp object deliberately when I'm trying to NOT pull out my hair.
( NOTE: I do this ONLY to stop myself from indulging in my pulling sessions, and NOT at other occasion! )

Now, if any of the above apply to you, please vote in the poll. In addition, I would like to point out that I as a person have a great life and am not depressed or anything, those habits are just hard to control... I think I might even have some sort of OCD or even be a masochist(and not the sexual-kind, mind you!)?

Hehe, well, cheers!~~

Sounds like a lot of stress or anxiety-related tics.

Where's the "I do more than one of the above" option? Trichotillomania, cutting/scratching, and nail-biting are all problems for me.

    • I've never understood people cutting themselves. Wouldn't it be more satisfying to cut others instead? I mean if you're depressed why not take it out on others instead of causing pointless injury to yourself.

If you cut other people, you go to prison.

        • No you don't. It's like how you cut yourself but you don't die.

        • You'd hold the blade backwards and accidentally disembowel yourself, Mr Johnny cut lately.

            Who's Johnny? And considering I'm so clumsy..who knows. >_> I'd make a rather terrible serial killer ._.

I think it's probably largely because of the endorphin rush you get after doing so.

Also, cutting other people doesn't hurt you, so that doesn't really help. I suspect you know that, though.

  • I have heard many people do these types of things.

BEEP BOOP ITDUZBOT RECOGNISES THIS CONCEPT.

…I really have no business making fun of other people for being awkward and robot-like. I respond to jokes like they're exam questions.

Oh, and verbally..stick up for yourself..part of being assertive! ..especially whenever anyone puts you down..I don't care if they are crying and calling you crazy..and acting like it's their fault..(I had a parent like that). Stick up for you..stick up for them..they don't know how to do it for themself yet.

Yes, a lot of people..me and others close to me in fact..and people in the celebrity world have all had issues like you describe. There is a lot of stress in the world and everyone develops their way(s) of coping. You said things felt destructive..and yes, (not saying they aren't normal for a lot of people)..but your habits are destructive. Having been in mental health nursing (and not a doctor)..I do have advice..but have to tell you that even if you consult a doctor..you may continue to have issues..you just have to keep working through.

Try some/all of these..and again, don't obsess about anything..roll with punches/adapt..everyday is a little different..and some days are more stressful than others: deep breathing..air is free and hopefully healthy if it isn't too polluted..very beneficial..do that instead of one of your other habits. Also, try thought reversal or replacement..meaning, say the opposite of negative thoughts to yourself..to see what you come up with..ideally, life/memories of the past should be as positive/constructive as possible..teach the people around you about this one too..most of them may be struggling also...that's reversal..replacement is just making up helpful thoughts to think instead of whatever you are in the habit of thinking..instead of "Cutting myself will relieve tension," say, "Wow, I'm ready for a brisk walk."..or something similarly constructive. ..keep the positives flowing..no matter how many times you have to reverse or replace..then they will be automatic after a while..or you won't feel like you have to reverse or replace as often hopefully. Try CAPS..Compliment, Ask, Act positive, Smile...don't obsess about it..especially when you don't want to attract attention or someone is in a bad mood..use it as an icebreaker when you think it could help. Be assertive about your needs. The aggressive people only care about themselves..the sad, self-absorbed people..don't internalize all their grief. Get away from the really manipulative, nasty people..they are digging their own bad reputations. Peace and best wishes.
