Sex is not a need

Sex is not a need. Needs are essentials like food, water, shelter, organs, and pretty much everything you need to survive if you want to live. You won't die from not having sex. Being obsessed with something does not make it a need. A 5 year old might be obsessed with that new toy that saw at walmart, but does that mean they "need" it? No. Being desperate for something doesn't make it a need either. Sex has zero importance, and calling it a need doesn't make any sense. Sex is a want, not a need.

I used to teach a finance and budgeting class. This argument came up numerous times under the wants and needs discussion.

Two topics, entertainment and sex (one and the same to me) always ended up in the needs category rather than what most people thought were wants.

Statistics show without entertainment and/or sex humans and animals committed suicide or died an earlier death than their counter parts.

So, there are some scientific reasons to place it in the needs category.

You are both incredibly right and incredibly wrong. Sex is not a need, but it certainly is important. Without sex, there are no children, and without children, humanity dies.

Artificial insemination. You don't need sex to reproduce. Also, due to people not knowing how to keep it in their pants, this planet is very over-populated. It also isn't a must that humanity continues.

      • Clunk42

Artificial insemination has all the parts of sex. It has a male ejaculating, and the semen entering a female's uterus. If you consider that to be all that sex is: a male ejaculating with the semen ending up in a female's uterus, then artificial insemination is sex.

The planet is not overpopulated. That is a myth that has existed for years and has been disproven time and again.

So, it is a "need" that a single person survive, but the survival of the species in general isn't?

          Not quite.

Even if it isn't over-populated now, it's going to be very soon.

I never said it was a need that a single person survives either.

The reason it didn't happen is because of a man named Norman "Green Thumb" Borlaug who led The Green Revolution. Before his initiatives in agricultural production, the world wasn't producing enough food to sustain 4-billion people. He is the reason half of us didn't starve to death after the 60's, because if we had kept doing what we were doing in the 40' & 50's when those predictions where made we would not have had enough food to feed as many people as we do now.

I get so nostalgic for the 90s sometimes that it's not even funny. Everything seemed so much more organic, genuine and down to Earth. I feel like there was a lot of optimism for the future in the 1990s.

Sometimes I want to start a YouTube channel, blog, or a podcast, but I don't know where to start. I have so many good memories of being in college, and working in radio broadcasting. I want to find something expressive to do, but I'm scared of putting myself out there.

Well I don't know about your speaking, but I can say firsthand that you write very well. Sometimes it's just about making connections with people that can help get you started, inspire and inform you.
Maybe just start by writing down some thoughts at night, see if you can find a running theme or something in there like a concept.
The world is interested in the female perspective and theres never been a greater platform. Perhaps a female perspective on the generation x times is something that both other people your age can resonate with and nostalgia-drenched millenials will be interested in. Everyone loves the 90's!

I consider myself asexual but even I realize that it is indeed a need for many people, and I respect that. It is a need in the sense that some people would be very unhappy without it, just like some people can't stand being alone without friends and family. You don't die from living an isolated life but it can really kill you inside. Now on the other hand sex isn't something one deserves, it's something that two people need to consent to because they both desire it with each other wether it is for fun or as an expression of intimacy. Non-sexual intimacy isn't a need either but most people would feel sad if they never experienced it with anyone.

Junkies get unhappy when they haven't had drugs for a minute. Would you also say they "need" drugs? Hmm, don't think so. I think you'd actually say the total opposite. There is a difference between being desperate for something and actually needing something. What a joke. People might not be able to stand not having sex for just a couple of days, but that's what happens when you obsess over something, as well as are totally addicted to something.

Well you could say that fresh fruit and vegetables aren't a need, since you can survive without them, but they are a need really for your health. Similarly, sex isn't a need for survival, but it can be a need for living a healthy life both mentally and physically. Besides, even if it isn't necessary to survive, for a lot of people it is necessary for living a fulfilled contented life, which is incredibly important too.

    • Unusuallynormal217

      That proves nothing.

You don't need sex to be mentally and physically well. Sure, people act like they do, but guess what? That's what happens when you're sex-obsessed and a sex junkie. Sex is just something people are desperate for, but does that make it a need? No. There is a difference between being desperate for something and actually needing something. Of course people are going to think they need it in order to live a fulfilled life. It's pitiful.

      • JellyBeanBandit

Yeah, you don't need it, but it does help, like fresh fruit/veg. I have to disagree there, I don't think most people who want sex are obsessed. It's a natural desire. Sex is very important, it's one of our most instinctive desires, so it can take a toll on some people's happiness and mental health to go long periods without it.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • Unusuallynormal217

          No, it doesn't.

The fact that people think they need it in order to be happy and "have good mental health" is ridiculous, and is enough proof that people are definitely obsessed with it.

Sex has zero importance. Sure, people might mope around after going a long period without having sex (a few days is the equivalent to a long period to someone that has sex), but that's what happens when you're obsessed and an addict.

Like clunk said its needed to populate the world. Idk if we have the resources to inseminate everyone. And sex is helpful for bringing two people together. This helps the two stay together to raise the kids together. Having two parents is scientifically proven to be one of the most important structures for a kid.

If you artificially inseminate everyone will they even still be raising kids together? And why wouldnt they just have sex? They probably arent gonna want to stay together as much if they arent sexually attracted. Sex is actually the most important thing next to water, oxygen, and food.

Populating the world is not a must. That's a bullshit argument to hide the fact that people are obsessed with sex. Nobody actually has sex to "bond" or whatever. It's all about pleasure. That's fine and dandy.

Enough with this nonsense. Sex is nowhere near as important as water, oxygen, and food. To even say it's as important as food, oxygen, and water is ridiculous.
