Shitty people

Ever met someone that doesnt ever talk or joke around only sits their quiet until you say something wrong and he jumps in to correct you. "No, actually the contract was signed in 2008 not 2009... I figured you would know that but I guess not..." then goes back to being quiet. Whats wrong with these people. My wife's sister is the embodiment of this. What is the word to call them? I like to refer to them as prick or snooty. Sometimes I call her Ms Correction.

They always think they're better and smarter than others and seem to be in a shitty mood at all times.

These are typically very insecure people, and yes, I unfortunately have met people exactly like this. They want so badly to come off as genius know-it-alls and make others feel inferior to them, but they just come off as assholes and usually end up making fools of themselves. It's pretty funny when they pull that BS and are 100% wrong in their "correction". I usually just smile and nod, then go back to whatever I was saying/doing before, because that's the opposite of the reaction they are looking for, lol.

I used to ride horses and the horse world was FULL of people like this. I got used to this and unsolicited advice pretty quickly, and learned to just let it go through one ear and out the other. It's definitely very annoying and condescending.

What you describe sounds to me like insecurity. There could be some narcissism too. She's so terrified of making a mistake that she doesn't say a word until she's certain she can get a zinger in and score a point. Or at least that's what it feels like she's doing in the scary little world inside her head.

People like her often work very hard to project an image of being smarter than everyone else in the room, but deep down, they know they're faking it. If what they say is challenged, that's terrifying, because they're afraid people will realise they're a fraud.

As long as her incorrect statements can't possibly have any serious, negative, real-world repercussions, I'd suggest you try to just shrug and move the conversation on. Getting into an argument with your sister-in-law could have negative consequences for you, and we should always try to choose to fight battles only when the value of winning exceeds the possible costs of losing, and the effort seems justified.

    • Idk but being slightly wrong seems to make her upset. Often times I doubt her facts are right when she corrects me but I dont wanna cause an argument. Sometimes I know shes incorrect but whatever.

      • Like she's insecure and just wants to look/be her best? It takes time and a little insight, but you can use sub communication to show her you know she's just trying to be right and that you don't think less of her if she says something that's wrong

That shows her she can do it with you and she can learn to be like that with everyone. Like if she wants to change though, and if she figures things out

I mean you know her better, do you think you could or should try to help her like that?

I've had one or two pupils like that.
