Should aggressive acts outside of playtime be penalized in sports?

Should a professional sports player keep his/her position on the team if they are charged and convicted of a physical assault which happened during their days off from playing?

Yes, absolutely. 12

Good question. It happened to the talisman of my football team (he punched someone in a bar). Problem is, the higher your profile, the more people want to see you made an example of if you do wrong. I think justice should be the same for everyone, regardless of things like "profile" and I also think he was judged on unfair things (like ability). Because his ability was adjudged to be that of a professional boxer, this was used in the case against him and important things (like intent or that he claimed he was acting in self-defence) seemed less important.

Then, there's the issue of his profile and whether he should be seen to have been *also* punished by his employer (the sports team). I can see why he would have been, but I don't agree with it. The court dispenses rightful punishment. That should be the beginning and end of it.

Yes, in circumstances that don't involve legit self defense, but to an extent that is reasonable.
I used to work with a guy that worked security in an area frequented by the San Diego Chargers players. Those hot shots were violent and rowdy as hell and they always got away with it. They're cocky and they think their status as sports stars means that they can get away with whatever the hell they want.

Maybe if they were judged fairly in the courts and were penalized out of play time due to jail time, they'd become less cocky and confident in their untouchable status.

No. In this case the sportman should be judged like any individual would be judged in the same case.
