Should certain books be banned and censored?

If the book isnt banned from a library its language is censored. Why is that?

Valid point. I hate book burnings and censorship. That being said just because it's in print doesnt mean its worthy enough for a public library. Theres millions of books, your local library usually has only around 100,000 and that's including dictionaries and volumes of pretty much every trade in existance.

Libraries should cater to the largest public good.

My local library is downsizing books since less people check them out. It's a sad sight.

Funny historical fact about the author of 1984

George Orwell compiled a list of over 100 people he suspected to be communists, or communism sympathizers, and secretly handed 38 (among those, the silent film star Charlie Chaplin) of that list over to the authorities so that the British government’s Information Research Department could better spy and stifle potential “sympathizers” during the Cold War and have them censored and potentially prosecuted.

In other words, he was a massive snitch

He also made sure to write “Jew” next to the names of Jewish citizens

The same year, if you recall Orwell died early from tuberculosis. He shilled for secret intelligence until his death.
The list was only publicized in 2003 because the Information Research Department was a secret propaganda agency that was not known to citizens of Britain at the time

The IRD also held rights to Orwell’s Animal Farm and used tax dollars to publish, translate, and distribute, the book to foreign nations during their colonial efforts. Smeared trade unionists, and combatted the Irish independence movement. They partnered with the United States CIA to produce the animated Animal Farm movie.
Orwell’s material was heavily sent tot he Middle East to sway influence away from the USSR

The department was admitted to the public in the 70’s by a whistle blower and dissolved

Tax dollars? The UK doesn't use dollars. Could you link a source, please?

Here is more on the department

Soviets had reported on the work of the department as it was running and after it’s fall, so all of my knowledge of it is from Soviet historians and written in Russian. I believe I have translated accurately enough

In public libraries, no. The original, uncensored work needs to be there as long as it was accepted in the first place.

There are some exceptions for schools in terms of banning books, but I don't believe there are any exceptions for censorship, period. You don't rewrite the story.

How big would a library need to be if it housed literally every book ever written? And in every language? It's unrealistic to think that this is possible, it doesnt mean the librarians are censoring the autobiography your neighbor wrote and self published.

The library will already control what books they have but it's normal for them to have a little bit of everything. The problem now is that some people in power are trying to censor facts and history from the public, which is wrong.

Public? Never, but being extremely choice when it comes to the children's section would probably be the best. Theres millions of books, being selective isnt censorship, its standards. It's just like how it's not standard practice to have crystal healing books on standby. But having classics and best sellers are.

    School library? Age appropriate.

Private ownership? Own mein kamph for all I care.

Depends on where the library is. Public or historical definitely No! Agree some should be labeled adult only.

Schools, especially HS and younger, Yes. Computer searches are censored so should hard copies.

Do you think hitler and stalin books should be allowed even if they're historical? I personally think they should all be allowed in a public library.

Also most libraries have only around 100k books what they have in stock isnt going to be every book in existance. 99% the same and 1% best sellers and updates.

You are correct even public libraries have to pick and choose. However, most libraries allow you to place orders if not book stores will.

Never thought about where some people went with this question. Editing the books, if the original author wants to maybe but otherwise I say no to censorship editing.

Didnt even think to "edit" the books. That's just plain censorship manipulation. It's either the original or nothing. Unless it's just a toned down 13 and under type thing.
