Should i do anything about my friends’ substance addiction?

Ok, so I’ve been friends with this girl online some number of years now, and lately I’ve seen pictures of her smoking and she’s admitted to doing drugs and drinking alcohol (she’s only 16, the legal drinking age in the US is 21). I’m at a crossroads here, because on the one hand I don’t want her to hurt herself, but I also don’t want to turn into a control freak. I even once mentioned that I hoped it was weed she was getting high on, because I’ve heard complaints that it’s illegal in some places while much more harmful things are legal, and she mentioned she smoked weed and drank vodka. I’ll admit that even though I don’t abuse these substances, I do drink a lot of Mountain Dew and eat snack food like chips and have fast food a bit, so if I tried to talk down to her about health it could just end up being a case of the pot calling the kettle black. What advice do any of you have for this?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

It's sounds like she is being a rebellious/wild teenager.
She will probably stop it once she is older or slow down on it atleast.
There isn't much you can do because if she wants to do it no one can convince her to stop.

  • Sounds like she was joking. It takes time to develop addictions if it is alcohol and weed is habit forming, not addictive.
BTW - the legal drinking age in the USA is 21, not 22. It’s 18 to buy cigarettes in most states, but 21 in some. Tell her to read up on side effects of what she is doing, beyond that you can’t do much.

From what you say it seems like she is experimenting with booze and street drugs. She will not be the first 16 year old & she will not be the last to do so.

What gives you the idea that she has problems with addiction?

    • She said so in her own words “Yeah I’m kind of a drug addict and alcoholic now lol”

That could either be a cry for help or could have been said in a light hearted manner.

The legal drinking age in the US is 21 not 22.

It's probably not the best idea to chat with an underaged girl online.

    • We started talking when I was 17 and she was 14, her birthday was later in the year.
