Should i have her fired?

Ok little back story. I'm an ultrasound tech. I work at a 4D place. I take cute 3D images of your unborn baby. I work 4 to 9 at a doctor's office after hours. I have a receptionist who is in charge of making popcorn, being nice to people, giving out the popcorn, and taking people's money. Since I have worked here I have had 3 patients tell me that the girl at the desk is asleep. I said something to her about it and it happened again. I said something to a co worker of mine, she told our office manager. The receptionist then got in trouble. My co worker told me that if it happens again I need to tell her because "she's fired". Since then it's happened two or three more times. I don't want to be responsible for her losing her job but on the other hand she's really not good at it. She's always late, she's not that polite, and apparently she can't stop falling asleep sitting upright at the front desk of a doctor's office. Would you tell the Co worker, who is in turn definitely going to tell the office manager, who is in turn definitely going to fire her?

I couldn't be the person that made someone else not have a job unless I knew they could get another one really easy or the job is just something to do and they don't need it. Could there be other things like she has another job and a kid to care for and just can't get any sleep?

    • She's a 33 year old virgin with no social life. She does work another job though.

Seems a little weird that you could know that much about some one and not know if you think she should be fired from her job or not.

        • This is my dilemma. We're not friends outside of work but we do talk at work. She's not a bad person but she's soooo lazy. My patients and my office are the ones that suffer. Half the time she can't muster a smile to greet people and to be honest the sleeping on the job thing had become quite an issue. Her job really isn't hard and the truth is there is no excuse for her behavior. The way I see it she's stealing from the company by not doing the job she's paid to do but emotionally, i don't know if I want to be responsible for her losing her job. I'm not her boss either, we're just co workers. And this is a part time job btw, she makes all her money at her other job.

I believe it is a hard problem to figure out. I understand how you feel cos with what I do if others don't do their part right it really messes things up but I am not the one that ends up making the call to fire anyone. I don't know if I could ever be a boss that had to make that decision maybe if there was a bell or something that could wake her up it would help?

            • Lol I wish... But no there's isn't a time where I don't need her awake and alert. So yeah... I don't know what I'm going to do.

There's a tyrannical troll moderator, who's constantly 404ing (for no legitimate reason).
Something is seriously fucked up here.
This is unprecedented; and it is not okay.

    • I was wondering about that. The last 20 posts I tried to read last night were gone. Wtf is going on around here?

It's pretty crazy. The most harmless posts are being deleted like, "Is it ok to still live with mom and dad at 28?"

Has anyone talked to her about it and given her fair warning that she could lose her job if she doesn't lift her game? 3 strikes and you're out? She could have all kinds of things going in her life outside of work.

Or... maybe she's just lazy. (I think she was fired from her previous job)

I had a similar situation where I worked, where a co-worker was ALWAYS 15mins late EVERYDAY SINGLE DAY. This was in a job where it was important we start on time as we were responsible for safety of people with medical issues.

If it was up to me, pragmatically I would've fired her, for that and other reasons, but it wasn't in my job description to do that. So later I asked my manager, "Do we have a flexible start time? As I notice <person> starts at 9.15 everyday. Can I start at 9.15 too?

This caused the manager to talk to the person who was always late. It worked for awhile, but she was still late getting to work half the time. In the end I just turned a blind eye to it. As I figured I'm not paid to worry about such issues and I'll leave it to people who are paid to hire and fire.

    Good luck.

    • Which is what I want to say...during the day there is an office full of people. At night when we're there, it's just us two. I need the help so it kind of is my problem.

And that is her, 15 minutes late everyday. In the seven months that I've worked there I've seen her show up on time 3 times. And I think I'm being generous.

And yes she's been spoken to about this problem specifically. A patient actually emailed corporate a picture of her sleeping on the job.

Well as much as I hate the idea of someone losing their job, sometimes in life someone has to make the hard decisions.

It may even set her on a better path in her life, as she sounds bored and disinterested in that job.

Yes, get the lazy prole fired. Un-productivity is like a disease in any decent workplace.

You don't know which book you are referencing?

That means you are just parroting back something someone else said.

          151 indeed.

I happen to know "Steve2.0" in person (I'm an acquaintance of his at the same school), and while he is certainly an arrogant, condescending asshole, he's not exactly lying on here. He is certainly incredibly smart, so I wouldn't be surprised if his IQ was as high as he claims, and he is a Mensan, as well. He is very wealthy, and I know he owns apartment buildings, I'm not sure about the hotel though, I'll have to ask him about that when I see him next. Yes, he is an asshole, but not a lying one.

Maybe she has sleep apnea. Such people have little or no control over their problem of falling asleep. If you care about her perhaps you should try to find out if she has such a problem, and if so, try to steer her in the right direction to get help. People with sleep apnea can fall asleep almost anywhere and anytime, including while driving. If that's her problem, then getting her help could save her life out on the highway and possibly save the life of somebody you love who might be on that same highway while she's there.

    • I think you're referring to narcolepsy. And no she doesn't have it. We've talked extensively about her issue. What I got from her was she didn't care enough to stand up and find something to do when she clearly knows she's falling asleep.

That isn't what happens if you have sleep apnea. What you are describing is narcolepsy.

You are mistaken. Narcolepsy is a different problem, and should probably also be considered.

With sleep apnea you are constantly waking up throughout the night when you briefly stop breathing, so then as a result of not getting good restful sleep you are constantly tired.

I know people who have this problem. They have to be diagnosed by a doctor and get a positive breathing apparatus. This enables them to get a good restful night sleep so they stop falling asleep in church, school, office, behind the wheel, etc.

excuse moi, you are mistaken. sleep apnea just means you wake up abruptly because you cant breathe for a few seconds during the night and immediately fall back asleep. NARCOLEPSY is where you can fall asleep and be dead tired no matter how much you sleep. sleep apnea is absolutely nothing compared to narcolepsy.

Entschuldigen Sie mich! Actually, I happen to be one of those that's been diagnosed with sleep apnea, so I know what I'm talking about. After I read your reply I looked up the definition for both afflictions and discovered the symptoms and even some of the treatments are similar, so maybe we're both right. After all, we're not diagnosing a patient, only giving our opinion. Furthermore, it's a moot point, because now it seems the OP has concluded that the only thing wrong with her is that she's lazy!
