I have always wanted to join the marines, but I'm not sure if my parents will approve. My dad is a foreign service officer, and he expects me to go to college. I'm smart and all, but I hate school so much, and I don't think I can take another 4 years of that. So, should I join up, and if so do you think my parents will approve.

Simple answer; it's your life. Your parents won't have to live with the choices you make for yourself in your life, will they?
I enlisted almost two years ago. Once you are completely broken down, you are built back up and learn disipline and self reliance. If you are in descent shape and you are willing to take a lot of shit, I'd say sign up.
Wait till your 18 and your parents wont be able to stop you. Do what you feel right doing.
Does your father not realize they pay for your college when you go? Some people are not made for college. If you want to join the service you should do it. If your dad will not let you at 17 wait till you are 18 and leave. At 18 they cant stop you and anything you do is your choice.
Do whatever you want. Personally I'm glad I'm not allowed in the military. I do not tolerate being told what to do so it wouldn't go too well.
Society expects you to attend university, but it's acceptable to stray away from the sheeple. Marine or not, become what you wish to be in life. As long as you're successful then that is what matters most.
if ya go joinin them marines then yall can go to school later on that there gi bill for short coin. that's if ya don't go getting blown the fuck up
My idea of what you should do:
Imagine you find yourself instantly transported to one of the better places in North Korea say Pyongyang. Being in Pyongyang you have enough to eat, the basic necessities of life are handled for you. However you are constantly at the mercy of an authoritarian state that controls most aspects of your life. You are told when to wake up, what job you will do, who is a good potential partner, you are daily subjected to political indoctrination, dissenting political opinion is not tolerated, exercise activities are enforced and at any moment you could be placed into a war with no choice in the matter.
If this sounds like a life you would like to lead then go ahead and become a marine or defect to North Korea. Really these options are pretty similar except you stand a much greater chance of going to war as a marine. I'm serious, cut through the propaganda for a second, if you think you need an authoritarian state constantly telling you what to do then go for it. Maybe you do, I don't know you but I know what my freedom means to me, think carefully about what it means to you.
