Should i tell my parents i'm an atheist?

My parents are conservative evangelical Christians. They don't like differing opinions. I think I should be honest with them, but I doubt they'll accept my stance. It's a matter of who they love more, the all-knowing sky daddy, or me. I'm not so sure I want to find out.

You should tell them. Yes, maybe they'll have a hard time dealing with it, but it's so important to let that conflict happen. It's important for the personal growth of all of you. If nobody ever challenges our opinions we will never get any wiser.
To a child the world is black and white. Everything is either good or bad, right or wrong. Of course the real world is way more complex and the way we learn that is through meeting different people who challenge our beliefs. Probably your parents chose to live in an environement where that didn't ever happen.
I've met many christians just aswell as atheists who were narrow minded like that. Not challenging those people is basically giving up on them.
Don't give up on your parents. They might surprise you.

good choice they say not to challenge those who you are financially dependent on lol

  • Many theists are intolerant of opinions different from their own(this also applies to many atheists). So you should not tell otherwise this may create friction.

I told my parents. Both were really understanding... at first. I think they thought they would be able to easily convince me to come back.

Do you have any support? Perhaps join a local athiest group?
It helps to have some people on your side for when the time comes.

If you think they'll accept it, tell them, if you think they'll beat you up and/or disown you, don't tell them.

Wait until you move out to the be extra safe. Hopefully shouldn't be too long for you, I wouldn't be able to stand a single day living in a religious household. Fuck that draconian medieval shit.

Hmm... the way I see it whether someone believes in a supreme diety or not is just a small part of what makes a someone who they are. I believe in God, but there are plenty of people here who I like, and dare I say respect, on IIN who are atheists. Faith perspective or lack thereof is just a small part of who you are. Just be yourself, and be the best you that you can.

As a Christian that I am saying this they shouldn't be judging you for being an aethist when God does that job for us all.. They should accept who you're because we were all created for the very reason that God has planned.

Tell them. If they are the all "fore giving" Christians that they think they are, there should be no problem. Right? All religious people are hypocrites.

Yes I'm joking I don't think your parents need to know your beliefs only if they are trying to force you to do something like go to church or go to bible school, that is against your belief and I would tell them.

        If not keep shstum
