I'm pretty disgusted with American companies who had a fit over Georgia voting law changes but they're okay with China's human rights atrocities because there's big bucks to be made.
If they were going to speak out, they should already have...by boycotting the Olympics.
Not while they are still in China. They will never get out if they do. They are still looking for the tennis player who spoke out. Vanished like a fart in the wind.
China will always try and censor shit and so people should speak out against China and the CCP.
And, just a thought...what if they didn't even know about the Uyghur genocide? I just had to look it up myself. You never hear about it on the news, etc.
My answer was no.
Look back in history the Olympics have been held in various countries with politically different views and ways of doing things.
This is a sporting event it's should stay about the sport. Getting other things involved opens it up to really not being a world wide competition.
If Russia or other cummunist country doesn't agree with free countries policies then you are saying they shouldn't attend or should protest. Just too much politics involved. Now I might agree with the people not involved protesting or even a media black out or just minimum coverage if it's in a country you have problems with. Take away the media hipe, you take away the advertisers and the money.
It's a sports event, not a political forum. I think they'd put themselves in danger if they did.
Why so they can all go missing like the other chic? If anything flee to America and play sports here. Speaking out is retarded if you're staying there.
I guess it depends what country they're from. If they're American, then criticizing China is just the pot calling the kettle black.
If I were there as a winter Olympics athlete I would say "I mean, look! It's artificial snow, right about everything about this country is artificial."
*Wakes up from a nightmare*
Well, it's a little late now. Perhaps some of them can release tell all books about their experiences after they have left China. I probably wouldn't want to say much until after I was away from China.
There was an american born skier that just switched sides to china. Fuck her and tell her to move to China as a citizen because she proclaimed that she isnt a citizen of the usa anymore. Let that dumb bitch go to a country that she literally would not of even been alive if born in.
Yeah I read that. Extremely disrespectful of her to do that. There was also this athlete, Armand Duplantis, from America who decided to compete for Sweden recently, my homecountry, and I found that pretty obnoxious somehow. He did it because his mom is from there.
The most common reason that people who live in the USA (whether they are US Citizens or not) compete for foreign country Olympic teams is that they are usually not good enough to qualify for the USA team; but are good enough to qualify for another country's team, and of course they have some kind of tie to the other foreign country (parents came from there, etc.).
The heaps of money the ccp was offering was apparently enough for her loyalty. She full renounced her citizenship to America. So I officially do not give two shits to what happens to her when her best friend china decides that she isnt winning enough.
I agree because she renounced her US Citizenship.
I know a person who is a US Citizen but competes for the country he came from as he is not good enough to be on the USA team. He is also a motivation speaker that I have seen speak in person twice and talked to after every event, and read his books - which is how I met him).
He actually trains at the same facility as the USA team (luge & bobsled tracks are fairly rare) and the USA Team members cheer him on and have no problems with him competing for his native country.
In my 3 decades of judging and officiating international events I learned that everyone from every country are friends with each other and support other athletes at their level.
I've seen equipment get stolen, and replacement equipment be lent by other nations by the competitors who were at the same level - so that they got essentially equivalent level equipment.
In one case that equipment theft happened to a USA recent Olympic Gold Medalist (people at that level use the ultimate custom built equipment at exorbitant cost). My memory is that the French Team lent him equipment from their recent Olympic Silver Medalist.
They did catch up with the equipment theft people - but they had already sold the USA Gold Medalist equipment; and race venue security was significantly improved.
If they cant rank in the US, how are they gonna win gold for another country, never mind all the sponsorship money and what not from switching to a country that you qualify for
Honestly it's for a better chance to compete in the Olympics in general. If you are no 5 in the usa you are probably no 1 in a lot of other countries.
As for that skier she got a couple million dollar deal from a company that's owned by china. And the Chinese media has been turning that into a massive PR victory that a US athlete chose china over her home country.
A lot of factors goes into who wins. Best Technical Skills, Attitude, and Focus can easily be wiped out with a minor mistake or just getting a bad track on a course where someone else gets a better track.
Enough people medal who have entered under another country that they have ties with to make it worth while.
In addition; just making the Olympics and all the support you get for being there is a Top Of The World experience. I can speak to that as I was an Official at one Olympics, and also at two world championships.
You just don't pass up a chance to get to the Olympics... It's worth it even if you don't medal (or even if you are a Coach or Official).
