Should parents choose their child's university course?

My parents want me to study 5 year medicine. I have no interest in this and dread the idea, I'd do totally shit in it and possibly wouldn't pass it.
What I really want to study is computer science as that is where my interests lie. I told them that I will not comply with their decision after a long and insulting monologue from my father, after which they disowned me. I must now look for a job, yet I'm still so young and always imagined myself studying at university first.

    They are your parents, and you are not their puppet. They can guide you, give you advice, etc.

    But what they can NOT do, however, is outright tell you what to do regarding something which could influence the rest of your life - university isn't a game, you ain't going there for fun. You're going there to get a degree, which will aid in getting a job.

    Do as YOU please.

    It's your life, not theirs. It's also their money, so if you won't study what they want to pay for, well quite frankly; you're fucked.
    I think it's fine that you choose your own path and get your education on your own.

    Disowned you? I doubt they would do that. You seem intelligent enough if you are to pursue either of those courses. Just explain to them nicely that you have a passion for computers and that human bodies and computers work differently. Make up something like you're scared of blood and hate seeing people...lol...
    I chose to study what my parents wanted me to, also because I got accepted everywhere I applied for it but it was also in the same field I wanted to be in...
    Just know that cutting off from your family is not a good option. You need their support.
