Sleep around eyes - siamese cats

My Siamese cat often has "sleep" around her eyes - also reffered to as "eye gunkies." I always clean it off for her when I see it. My tabby doesn't have this issue, but I noticed my mother-in-law's siamese does. So maybe it's normal/common in Siamese cats? Anyone know?

First of all do not give any pills or topic medication without checking with a vet first.. It is dangerous for cats.. I had a cat a siamese that died because of kidney stones the symptoms developed really fast and it was too late to save him. And i had another cat that had cat flu with sneezing eye gunk and runny nose just like humans the only exception is that the virus reamains in their system for the rest of their lifes and it can relapse at any time my cat was a real bad ass : D so it didn' t kill him although they usually die from it.. Anyhow in your case maybe the cat has probably slept in a drafty place or if it's just a small amount of it is just normal the gunk in cats as in humans is just mucus secreted from the lacrimeal glands in order to clean the eye surface of any impurities... So there you go nothin to worry about

Sorry to hear about your cat :( My lil girl seems to be okay... gets a little crusty/gunky around her eyes from time to time, but I just wipe it away with a damp cloth. She seems fine, thank goodness :)

First thing i thought, is maybe your tabby knows how to clean it off on his own. My cats get it sometimes, but most of the time it gets cleaned off when they bathe.

My cat has a form of herpes (not like the STI, something very different), and gets snotty and globby eyes. If you give them lysine, it should clear it up. Just put a little in their food once a day. See if that helps.

Oh really? Yeah I think purebreads are more prone to stuff like that. My Siamese seems really healthy, and I recently switched foods... haven't noticed her eyes gunking up quite as much :)

A small amount of sleep can be normal, and yeah some breeds (including Siamese) are more likely to have it than others. If there's not too much of it you probably don't need to worry.

Just don't eat your cat's eye gunkies. That would not be normal.

Omg, I would never eat it! lol And yeah, it's just a little amount. Though I might try switching food for her...

Neither of my cats never have gunk around their eyes. Maybe they have a food allergy? Do they blink or rub their eyes a lot, or do they seem to scratch often? Try switching them to an all natural, grain-free food and see if that helps. I know some breeds of dogs are more prone to the staining under their eyes, so perhaps it's the same way with cats :)

Hey, it's me, lol. It's only the Siamese that gets like that. And it doesn't seem to bother her one bit. It's not so much gunky as it is crusty, just like the stuff we get when we sleep. But maybe I will switch their food up. I'm thinking of taking my tabby to the vet, since she seems to be getting fatter. I worry about her. I've been stricter with her food, yet she still seems to be gaining. Odd, since they are both quite active. I'd like to put her on diet food, but they are both only between a year and two years old, so they're pretty young for that!

Oh, hi! Aww, maybe fat kitty has a thyroid problem or something. The vet might tell you to put her on Science Diet or something they recommend but don't do it! Science diet isn't really good food, no matter what the vets tell you. It's all corn and fillers. I put my cats on Solid Gold Indigo Moon. It's a little more expensive but it's low in carbs and high in protein. Plus it's all natural and grain free, so if your kitty does have an allergy, that might clear it up. It's also okay to put saline drops in your kitty's eyes twice a day to help flush out the tear ducts. Nothing medicated like Visine or anything, but just pure saline eye drops. I'd say if a food switch and eye drops don't help her it's time for a vet visit, but chubby kitty may need to be checked for thyroid problems anyways. Good luck!

Thanks, Jenn! Yeah that was on my list of things for 2010, whether she wants to go to the vet or not! lol I am a little worried it might be a thyroid problem. I just hope they can do something (hopefully inexpensive), since I don't know how I could live without her. She's my baby, and she means so much to me. So I'll keep my fingers crossed, and hopefully it won't be anything major. As for the other one, I will check out the different brands of food. Hopefully they sell that kinda in Canada! Unlike Cherry Coke :( We can't get it here, which sucks, since I am sooooo addicted to it! lol You lucky Americans! ;)
