I don't drive a car but I buy every driving simulation I can because I love the idea of driving. I do a pretty nifty Scandinavian Flick and think I could probably do it in real life too.

P.S. And I dated a Finnish woman which automatically gives me driving points. The Finns are better drivers than anyone else in the world.

The handful of times I've driven in Europe I've realized that I was hopelessly outclassed. In the US I'm an excellent driver, but in the UK I'm a total chav.

Hmm, I've never heard anyone say that before. Although apparently American roads are a lot easier to drive on. The common criticism with American cars is that they don't corner or handle well (cornering is really important here - especially with roads like this: http://topcultured.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/The-Stelvio-Pass-Italy-Long.jpg). Maybe if something is made easier, there's less opportunity to build certain skills.

I tend to think the Finns outclass us Brits completely and it's for the reasons above. They have driving conditions we don't often see, plus they take driving *so* seriously. Between 1980 and 2000, a Finn won the world rally championship twelve times. The next best is Italy and Spain with two wins each (both the same person each time). That's how superior the Finns are; that a country with only five million people can completely dominate world rallying.

          Yeah, that's true.
I own a Ford Thunderbird, it is LOVELY to drive (it's fast and low to the ground but heavy, it gives a great feeling of "I'm not going to fly off the road") but it can't corner at high speeds without going "skreeeeee" XD

I would agree that American cars don't tend to handle very well. I think I'd have to try a three point turn on just about every single one of those switchbacks in the picture.

Thinking about this again, it's a certain type of American car. The ones with live axles and stuff like that. I heard some still use the Hotchkiss drive system (I thought that went out in the 1960's). And the power output for the engines is pretty dismal. Rather than tune them up, it seems common to just make the engine bigger.

Having said that, the cars Ford make for the European market (here, the Focus and the Mondeo) are apparently excellent in pretty much every department (including handling). The Focus ST has a smaller engine than its predecessor (two litres, 122 CID) but produces more bhp (about 250) and will still get 40mpg and do 0-60mph in six seconds and they look great. I'm not sure America has really embraced hot hatch culture like everyone else, though.

Yeah, me too. It takes them something like three years to learn to pass their test and they practice in skid pans and all kinds of things. The person I dated was an astonishingly good driver compared to British people.

I save gas like fucking hell. The needle will always drop less than half of what it would if anyone else in my family was driving that same distance. I've checked this over the years and there's never been an exception.

I find it amusing how many times I've gotten props for my reversing and parallel parking skills. Is it because I'm a woman in a big vehicle? Who knows but ya, I can drive that thing. And park it too! Imagine that!!

I drive a stick (manual transmission), I show some uncommon courtesy to other drivers, and I have brake drifted in my driveway before. xD

The first fact alone makes me above average. How many females do you know that can drive stick? xDD

I drive a Mazda 626 it's got a short stick in it which is why it only took me two days and the expertise of a semi-truck driver to learn to drive it right. I *could* drive a truck (long stick) if I wanted to, but anything bigger than a car feels like driving a TANK to me for some reason. I feel like I have no idea where my "boundaries" are in a truck. (Now something small like a Ranger might not be too bad... even though it is a long stick...)

I love my car so much anymore that I would hate to go back to an automatic. I hate even climbing into an auto because my left foot wants to mash down on a clutch pedal that doesn't exist. :P

Oh heck yeah! I totally agree! If I could have any new car right now, I'd have a Mazda with a manual transmission and a Diesel 4 cylinder or maybe even 6 cylinder engine. That's my dream car. If it was well made it and took care of it would probably never break down! :D

I was taught to drive stick on a performance Focus. It sucked so much ass =/
My next car will be a stick. I have a buddy who has a stick and the only thing that wasn't stolen from her was her car, because nobody could drive stick.

Manual trannys are also way easier to fix, my cousin could do it for me. Next car I get will be a stick.

      • MissyLeyneous

That's exactly why I love them. You're chances of getting your car stolen are greatly reduced, and manual trannys rarely EVER break down, and when they do they ARE easy to fix. :D

I was taught to drive neither, by my parents that is. I had to wait until I was married and then my husband and his parents helped me learn how to drive. His dad had trucker's experience so that's how I learned to drive stick.

My friend's dad taught me how to drive a motorcycle when I was around 14-15. And my dad was a mechanic of sorts and he likes fixing cars so we had a wide variety of beaters to learn on. His theory, if you can drive a piece of shit, you can drive anything. I actually learned on a giant boat of a car. And then I learned the beauty of power steering. But my mom refused to drive anything with an automatic engine so I had to learn manual.

Crazy the amount of people who use the inside to go straight over on a roundabout.... Look in the Highway code (UK) - you're supposed to stay in the left!

      • Is it the done thing to indicate out of a roundabout in the UK?

        • flowergirl87

Yes, usually, but many don't. You're supposed to indicate 'off' just after you've passed the exit before the one you wish to take. Obviously, if you're taking the first exit, it's just a left indication. But we don't indicate off mini roundabouts (which I can see the sense in because they're so small.) I would say about a third of drivers here don't indicate at all! It's pathetic.

Sliding is nice. I like sliding. Done most of the (dubbed dumb by my dad) car tricks. I only slide my car on snow (Love my car too much to do otherwise) But I do stupid things in my gf's car (2012 Mazda 2, stick shift)
I like stick shift. Full control. Glad my gf drives srick, cause my car is an automatic and I do miss stick shift. When I want to do some real shifting, I get either my gf's car (But that's a weak car), or a mate's Subaru Impreza. Lovely car that Impreza. If I can take a corner with my car with 140kph. I can take the same corner with the Subaru with 180kph (or more).
        Very stable car.
