Some people don't read

I'm always surprised when someone claims they don't read... Anything. Not books magazines not anything for the sake of reading. My brother in law says he hasn't read a book since high school. I find this bizarre . Anyone on here NOT read for pleasure or learning sake?

  • I can read stuff if it isn't too long like posts and comments on here or news articles.
I've never been able to read a whole book and understand what I read though. I read very slowly and have trouble comprehending more than a couple paragraphs. I often have to read things a few times to understand what I read but I've gotten much better at it over the years.
I think I may enjoy reading if it wasn't such a chore for me.

The internet is full of words. The problem is that people who dislike reading usually think that it's boring. That's the faults of parents and schools. Parents that actually get kids turn it into a chore. Schools turn it into work. Neither thinks to give the children something entertaining. People like entertainment. People don't like work. Schools want kids to read but they want them to read the stuff that adults enjoy.
P.S. Your name. Did you pissed off that all your choices were taken or something? (^.^) lol

The last time I voluntarily read books was around age 9.

I would assume it's cause I can't sit still but I have done movie, tv series, gaming marathons and loved them. Studied often for 6-12 hours straight too

Maybe it's that reading a book is too simplistic and idle of a task, like laying on a beach for hours not doing anything - something I've never done either when at a beach

    • Are you very energetic ? I'm lazy lol but reading doesn't take much effort for me. Some people have a lot of energy physically but find reading mentally tiring.

Being energetic is definitely part of the reason. It's why I think I'll never gain excess weight

I read occasionally for pleasure, but more often than not for communication and information purposes. I probably read a book once a year, if that - it's not a particular passion of mine.

I don't like to read. But I enjoy reading manga, and I can read something long if it's interesting.

I don't understand this either. I am always reading. I am not a great connoisseur of books, but I am always reading a few different ones. If not for simple pleasure, then for information. For example, I have my toddler nutrition book and baby signs book that I reference often. And I don't often watch the news, so I read it.

  • I have read books before, stephen king books in particular. I've read thinner, the regulators, and under the dome. However, I don't particularly enjoy reading as I am more of an xbox person. I will however read atleast two to three articles a day, online. Mostly about medical things, and I must say I have come to learn a shit load of things that other people can't begin to comprehend, just from reading things online.

These days I very rarely read for pleasure. If I wasn't in full-time education, I don't know if I'd read to educate myself or not.

Either way, I don't find it hard to imagine someone rarely or never reading for pleasure. There are as many ways to live your life as you can possibly imagine. Is it *that* hard to imagine one without reading?

    • For me yes! It's one of my favorite things. I met my boyfriend in a book store.

Well, music is one of my favourite things. I spend almost all my alone time listening to it and I wouldn't be the same without it. That doesn't mean I find it at all difficult to imagine that some people don't include music in their lifestyle.

My point is that you can remain dedicated to reading while being able to comprehend that not everyone is the same. It doesn't hurt to open your mind a bit more.

        • You can't read and listen to music? I read music magazines. I mean it's your choice not to read but I love reading about music as much as listening.

Of course you can! That wasn't my point at all. I was making an analogy; just because you love something (e.g. reading), doesn't mean it's surprising that other people don't like it (e.g. I'm not surprised to find some people don't like music, even though I love it). My point was that if you genuinely can't imagine how someone could be different from yourself, you need to expand your imagination.

Sometimes it's better to use common sense. Reading is, has been, and always will be important to making civilization possible. And I do mean books, nt jst txts k?
