Something you'd like to do but don't because of your gender?

What is a hobby, job or activity that you'd like to try but haven't because of your gender? As in, something that your gender can physically do but gender roles/stereotypes/fear of ridicule/feeling unwelcome prevents you from trying.

Walking around shirtless when it is hot, for one thing.

I have to agree with that, even though I'm in a relationship and your comment doesn't really apply to the OP's question...

The pressure to date or be with someone when you're single is way too overbearing. Why isn't it just ok for someone to be alone if they are stable and independent? I feel like it's just none of other peoples' business really.

    • Is it something you want to do but don't because you're a woman?

From OP: "As in, something that your gender can physically do but gender roles/stereotypes/fear of ridicule/feeling unwelcome prevents you from trying."

So, if that's something you genuinely want to do but have not done solely for the reasons I listed then yes, it counts. If you don't actually want to do that or if you have no issue with doing it then no, it doesn't count.

An example would be something like a man wanting to sew quilts but doesn't because it's feminine, he fears getting teased or he feels excluded because most quilters are women. Feel me?

Pretty much something I want to do but don't. Most dudes say it's weird or scary or that I'm crazy for thinking it, so I've pretty much put that fantasy away.

  • Nothing, really. Does having long hair and making it look as pretty as I can count? I do that anyway. ^_^

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Well if you're doing it then it doesn't count because the question is about what are you NOT doing but wish you could.

How long is it? Do you get teased over it?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Well to be honest, I had a hair cut recently so it isn't as long as it used to be but I keep it perty. The length I had a little while ago was about shoulder length.

Did I get teased for it? Yes, ish. I got some iffy comments but mostly compliments. Some people would should "get a hair cut!" and some would ask if they can put their hand through my hair and play with it.

I got confused for a girl a couple of times. I remember walking past this older chap and he was just confused. I walked past and he said "What the...?" Aha.

        • Awww, why did you cut it?

My brother got whistled at by a passer by once when he was wearing a half-shirt (unfortunate toilet paper shortage incident...haha). Hilarious when they realized he was a guy. They had slowed down and pulled over to let us catch up so they could chat but when they saw he was a dude they peeled out fast.

When I was a kid, a lot of girls' toys looked really fun. I actually DID have an easy bake oven (Oh, the spice cake!). Now I bake in a REAL oven. I also had TONS of stuffed animals, but so did a lot of my male friends at the time...

I'm also artistic, so make-up has always had a slight appeal. For now, I'm cool with zombie/vampire make-up on Halloween.

I'd have a bromance, or several. I've admired the relationships between male friends for some time now. My best female friendships were similar, but, and this may be because I'm an outsider looking in, they seem to be less solid and definitely much harder to come by.

    • Koda

I was gonna say the opposite thing xD I find that most male-male friendships are interest/hobby-based. I've had few deeper friendships with males. I've always been a bit jealous of girls who have a "best friend forever". You know, the kind that doesn't ditch you as soon as they get a girlfriend/you fall on hard times xD I used to think some of my friendships would last forever, but a lot of them dissolved after high school. My all-time best friend moved away... At least I still have my family (:

Rapping... lol. I'm a white woman, the deck is stacked against me, but I love writing raps, and free styling and creating my own beats. I just know I'd never be taken seriously so it's like a hidden hobby.

It'd be nice to be able to walk around shirtless without getting stared at too. To be able to feel the wind and sun on my little breasts without the world staring and judging. Maybe someday.

One of the rappers I was most impressed with was a white woman. I think her name was Carmen? I saw her video on YouTube a few years ago, but never looked into her any more after that because I just don't listen to rap much, but she was kick ass. I liked her instantly. The fact that there are so few women rappers is all the more reason to pursue that path :)

Hair stylists have told me women would pay thousands of dollars to be born with the hair I have for free. I would love to grow it 3 inches past my earlobes. Without any work, my hair would make me look like a cover girl minus the make up.

        Yeah, that's true.
But in the end fear can prevent you from doing things, like travelling alone as a woman.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • I think this whole fear some women have of walking alone at night is due to the hysteria from others claiming that it's extremely likely to be attacked if you're a woman alone, but in most ways you're less likely to be attacked.

So just try to block out the people telling you that you should be scared of being out alone at night and hopefully that fear wil die down. :)

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • It's not that the chance of it happening is extremely high, more that if it does happen women have very little chance of overpowering an attacker or getting away unscathed. You just never know who is out there but you know if the wrong guy is out there he can easily fuck you up bad and there's little or nothing you can do about it.
