Static shock from my vacuum cleaner

Over a year ago, before moving out of my old house i was vacuuming my bedroom floor and i received nasty shocks. I went to switch the pipe from my left hand to my right and tried vacuuming with that but my own hand gave me a shock??? How is that possible?

My new house doesn't have carpet and it's tile so i don't get shocks at all now, but now i think to myself what caused the shocks.
