Survey-automated/self driving cars

Are you looking forward to the day that we have self-driving cars? Most people I know do not want them. I happen to like the act of driving and worry that option will be taken away and we will be forced to use them. The only people I know who are excited about these future vehicles are techno geeks who work in the computer industry. What are your feelings on the subject. Would you want an automated/ self driving car?

I don't see it being able to work in very rural areas like where I live. The roads are so varied...pavement switching to dirt/gravel without much/any warning, very narrow roads (many of which 2 cars cannot fit side by side, or its a very tight squeeze), many roads have no lines or markings, tons of animals, lots of unmapped and incorrectly mapped areas, steep hills and curves, thick vegetation, mud, flood prone areas...so many variables that-to me, at least with current technology and mapping-seems impossible and very unsafe. I can see how it could make cities and high traffic areas safer and faster though. But how do they perform in bad weather? Road construction? Emergencies (animals, unexpected obstructions, emergency vehicles, etc)?

I wouldn't want a self-driving car myself, I'd never want to live in a city either.

    • You bring up many of my own concerns. How the hell are they going to perform in far less than ideal weather or road conditions?

Also I don't like the fact that machines will be making ethical choices for us and we will be left with the consequences. Here's an example: You are driving down a road. A fuel tanker truck is heading at you in the opposite lane. There is an obstruction in the road ahead. You have the choice of having a head on collision with the fuel tanker truck, hit the obstruction (maybe it's a child, a dead deer, or a tire, or you swerve right and end up in a flooded canal or hit a crowd of bystanders. What would the car decide? Your decision would depend on the obstruction. Would it be able to tell if it's a child, a deer, a dead dog. I want to be able to make the decision myself.

I would not mind too much as long as I had the option to turn it off and drive it myself if I wanted to. It would be cool on long trips or in city traffic.

Driving is such a waste of time. The best thing about the train or bus is that you can read or check emails or browse the internet while you're travelling. Having a self-driving car would be like having your own personal bus. Plus you wouldn't have to pay for a taxi to get home after a night out, your car could drive you. You wouldn't even have to find where your car is parked, it will find you. Not to mention there'll be much fewer accidents and deaths on the roads. So yeah, I can't wait!

    • How do you know there will be fewer accidents? Because the people investing money into them told you that. It will cost owners money to keep the computer systems and sensors running in tip top shape for one thing.

    I love to drive.
But, like to cover miles too.
I wouldnt mind driving till I need to sleep.
then making time while the vehicle drives itself.
I do like the warning or safety options built in.
    Because I ride motorcycles also.
the minor fender bender to you.
can be a life changer for me.
So, if your car prevents you from crashing into me.
    Thats a good thing.

    • But why should anyone else be forced to ride in an automated car so you can ride a motorcycle?

What if you fall asleep in your car and wake up out of gas and in the middle of no where?

For me, personally? No! I only welcome autonomous cars, if I can turn the autonomy off! I love driving and would only turn on auto pilot if I'm stuck in a traffic jam. But everything else - manual driving mode and sport mode!

But I do welcome autonomy in general. Autonomous cars mean less distracted drivers, less accidents and safer roads. People who aren't interested in driving, just put the destination, push "Drive" and then can text, take selfies, eat, put make up on, sleep, etc... without being a danger.
And autonomous public transport means no buses cutting you off and running red lights.

Now if we could make autonomous bicycles, or at least ones that the rider across the head if they run a red light, that'd be great!

I'm not a computer geek, but I hate driving so much that I'd rather a computer did it. Chances are much greater you die with humans behind the wheel anyway, so I'll take the small chance my car murders me. That said I'm not buying till they work out the bugs.

peoples who commute into cities everyday are the ones who stand to benefit

id lose my mind if i hadta do that

  • I think there will always be a choice to drive manually, but there will be more safety and comfort features; like biometrics on the steering wheel to make sure you have the fingerprints of an authorized driver, the rear view mirror will do retinal scans to make sure you are capable of driving, and a heads up display that will let you watch your favorite show while in self-drive mode. Self-drive lanes will probably replace HOV lanes and speed limits will be increased for those lanes.
The technology already exists for the things I mentioned. Uber air will be interesting though.
