Tattoos, is it me or does anyone else think they are ugly?

It seems every second person has a tattoo - especially females. I think they are the most ugly and vile things I have ever seen. Tattoos have fallen into the hands of the geeks now. It seems that the biggest dorks out there all have tattos - and they want everyone to see them. I hope these things go the way of Bell-Bottoms and platform shoes. If you want to make yourself look like a piece of trailer trash; get a tattoo. What is really sad, is when you se a pretty girl with one. To me it is like spray painting the Mona Lisa - a unexcusable crime. Is it just me, or does anyone else think they suck?

I don't like them either I'm 25 and still have not marked up my body with a tattoo. My BF has some and i really don't like them but i can't tell him what to do with his body. Honestly I feel as if though society makes them to be cool and hot. I just wonder what they would look like when they are 60 .

I can't stand tattoos. To me the trouble is too, that a lot of people get them and say it's because it's a way to show they are individualistic, but they aren't!!! If everyone is now getting a tat, how does that show you are an individual??? Also, many say they get them to make a statement but people don't even really look at another persons tattoo, not really. They see the ink but they don't really care what it is or says. I'm sorry and this is just my opinion but to me, tattoos (more specifically on women) scream TRASH, low class and they always will. A cashier at a store near here has every finger tattooed and all her neck I swear I get the impression because of her tats on every finger that she's been in prison.

Normal - putting a tattoo on a nice body is like putting a bumper sticker on a Rolls Royce....unless of course the bumper sticker read "My other car is a rolls Royce" which would be obnoxiously funny to me!!

What I hate about tats, they're lame and the older I get and the more people I see with them the more apparent this becomes. Over the years I've had some bad ideas and things I thought were once cool aren't anymore. I'm just glad I don't have my youth etched into my skin. Ladies if u must get a tat please please don't put them on your legs! A women's legs are beautiful....why on earth would u put splotches of crappy ink all over them....and men shave your beards....nothing is worse than a 145lb wuss in skinny jeans trying to look rugged ....not to mention a study done recently stated that men's beards are dirtier than a toilet seat and several study participants had fecal matter in their beards. Enjoy the poo, Pabst and Parliaments :). Sorry I live by a lot of hipsters and they annoy me .

Good way of describing them, putting a bumper sticker on a Rolls Royce lol! or say finding graffiti all over your brand new Mercedes. God gave you a beautiful body, don't deface it.

Normal - They're just horrible. Even if it's one of the 'cute' ones and not the spanish galleon on the sailors back, I just wonder why someone so desperatley wants something like their name in chinese permanentley marked upon their posterior.

I don't like them either. The way I can see the skin over the ink just grosses me out. It's not like I have anything against those with tattoos, but I just don't really like them. I can't imagine someone wanting that tattoo years later, either. Everyone seems to think that they're that rare person that will always love their tattoo. Every adult I know, at some point regrets getting it.
I'm not conservative, narrow-minded, or whatever. I'd think of myself to be the complete opposite. Some are pretty interesting and are good looking, but I just have this thing where it... just bothers me when I see them. So, in theory and not in person they're kinda cool, but otherwise it just bothers me. All of my friends think I have some kind of OCD by certain things I do. I can't really help it, but that's just me.

  • Tattoos, at best, have the artistic merit of airbrush painted motorcycles, cars and vans - which is to say: virtually none.

At worse, and this is 90%+ of them, they range from commercially tacky cliches, (how many Yosemite Sams, chinese symbols etc etc etc can anyone be expected to appreciate?) all the way to low-life kitsch, as follows:
    1) just-got-out-of-prison kitsch;
    2) just-came-out-of-my-heroin-coma kitsch; and,
    3) just-back-in-business - STDs treated! kitsch.

Why does everyone want to join the circus? I have no idea. But when these tats go out of fashion - and the will - dermatology stocks will soar.

I have a few tattoos but they are part of who I am. I have my Brothers name, Birthday, and death date tattooed on my back in memory of him dying in Iraq. So your telling me that having this on my body as a reminder of my brother means I have

      1) just-got-out-of-prison kitsch;
      2) just-came-out-of-my-heroin-coma kitsch; and,
      3) just-back-in-business - STDs treated! kitsch.

Maybe you shouldn't judge people based on what they look like. Like you I'm sure you don't want people judging you. It's kind of like the fad where all the preppy girls are hanging the flowers in their cars.

Every tattoo I have is for a reason. I didn't just go out and say oooooh a grim reaper i want this on my body, NO!!! I got them for a reason, I have a few that are religion based, and one in memory of someone I love. So stop judging people.

Why can't you remember your brother without a tattoo? My brother is no longer here either but I don't need a tattoo to remember him. My memory does just fine. Also, you could just have a picture in your house (or wallet) and look at either of those and think of him whenever you liked. Also, who (including yourself) is ever gonna see that tattoo on your back anyway, unless you have your top off on a sunny day? Then people might constantly be asking what the name and date is etc and reminding you of an event you might not want reminding of (or at least at that monent). I personally find tattoos horrible to look at that's not being judgemental, it's just how they make me feel.

Exactly what I was going to respond. You usually remember people with a photo in a frame on your bedside table or mantlepiece.

If (no offence to the poster) her brother hadn't died in Iraq, she'd have got a different tattoo and attached some different meaning to it.

My brother also is no longer with us, I don't need a tattoo to remember him. My memory does just fine also.

"Maybe you shouldn't judge people based on what they look like."

A tattoo is a visual point of reference irrespective of the meaning attached to it. You cannot smell it, when touched it feels no different to un-inked skin, you cannot hear it and you cannot taste it. It is 100% visual. It's designed to be seen and cannot be experienced in any other way. What's more, it INVITES examination if it's in a prominent/exposed position on the body. You're making a statement with a tattoo and you must expect people to judge it on face value. Okay, it might be highly significant to you but unless you're prepared to explain the meaning of each and every mark on your body to everyone you ever meet you're going to have to accept people will draw their own conclusions on what they see. Anyone who has a prominent tattoo and resents people looking at it has obviously missed a very vital aspect of the whole concept of skin illustration.

In my opinion, tattoos can be artwork however, I do not agree with people using their body as a canvas for artistic value. There are several other things in the world for that artwork to go on than your body. Tattoos are also known to carry health hazards such as skin cancer and other related illnesses so to me, I consider tattoos as tramp stamps on people. Were not cattle for crying out loud, no reason to be "branded".

I saw this young lady, a server at a swanky rooftop restaurant no less. Absolutely stunning looking. Classic Hollywood look from back in the day like Sophia Loren, Hedy Lamar etc. Kind of an ethnic looking lady- French European I would say and petite. Just a beautiful young lady. She had these stringy tattoos on both her legs. What a tragedy. Who knows what other tattoos she probably has. I can not believe people are soooo brainwashed that they casually go about getting these things. It is really unbelievable, but then you have a world of sheep that believe in whatever deity of their society.

This is understood. I don't care for tattoos either. I think people's skin should be unmarked except for birth marks and scars. I wish people would stop tramp stamping themselves because they are unattractive and unlike Bell-Bottoms and platform shoes, tattoos are generally permanent.

I love tattoo's, i have 7 myself and have my 8th planned. I would consider mine all beautiful, they're are a lot of shit ones out there thou, i'll agree with you on that. My boyfriend has no tattoos himself and is not likely to get any, i know he likes all mine. Most of my family members have got tattoos, i think they add great interest to a person, most will have some kind of story. My Ex-Boyfriend hated tattoo's, he said tattoo'd people were lower class citizens and banned me from getting my third one... Needless to say i split up with him, and the tattoo i got after is the one that everyone comments how beautiful it is. So the sadness i went through whilst going out with him (mentally abusive)and the strength i gathered to spit with the twat inspired one great tattoo. If you still think it's a bad thing, you must be small minded. Not to mention blind.

I know millionaires with tons of ink.. I know freemasons which you prolly kno nothing about, with tats on there face.. education has nothing to do with self expression. I read books all day an i love art and tattoos. I love my ink an it's for me.. In no way do I care for attention or follow a crowd.. Yea i smoke, it calms me down an i like to.. If I quit does that meam Im following the crowd of nonsmokers? really I keep to myself but I know to never give someone so judgemental like you time of day. I won't date women with tattoos. If they've made such a poor decision, I don't want to be with them. Once I find out a woman has a tattoo, it is all over. I don't want to see it and be reminded of their self-mutilation over and over again.

And frankly, I don't care if they don't want to be with me because of my views, either. ;-)

There are definite correlations between being not smart (or at best not being a rational clear thinker), being "low class", being a socially malleable follower type, and having tattoos. Just as with piercings, smoking/drug use and other similar activities.

From an aesthetic standpoint, I have never seen a woman whose appearance was improved the least little bit by a tattoo, and it almost always detracts from their appearance. Men's tattoos... well as a guy I don't care, but I think they all look stupid and terrible, too.

You are getting a deliberate visible mark. You will be judged. People will lie to you about them to be polite. Most of those judgements about your tattoos will be negative. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To me, I think they've become cool and trendy, a bit like smoking was in the 60's and flares were in the 70's. It's just the in thing to do. With young people it seems the in things to do are drink energy drinks, vape and get a tatt, oh and post everything you do (including your latest meal) on Facebook. I don't see the appeal myself. I think they're un-elogant (if that's a word) and if a beautiful woman has one, I think, why, just why would you spoil such a beautiful body? I just don't get it at all.

I understand that people have different tastes and they may not be the same as my own tastes. Here is my 2 cents on tattoos: Ladies, regardless if you are gorgeous or average looking, your tattoo makes you look LESS attractive. It's not pretty to me. It's like putting graffiti on a true work of art. The female body is a work of art. You can enhance it with a modest amount of makeup, or by shaving your legs/pits, but please know that to me, at least, a tattoo takes away from your femininity and beauty. Currently, not getting a tattoo is actually more of a sign of individualism to me anyway, if that's what you think you're doing with a tattoo. Every young person has one now. It's conformist, and more importantly it's UNATTRACTIVE. Not beautiful, not cute, not anything positive you think it is and it just turns me off.

I used to love tattoos as a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s. They were mysterious Americana found in the back room of a dusty roadside pool hall. Or, on a sailor who earned it by just enlisting.

Now they're freaking everywhwere. On anyone. For any reason. ("Yes, this one above the back of the my left knee IS just like my favorite childhood teddybear. It was sooOOOO cuddly.")

Thanks for ruining a piece of Americana for me, fools.

I think it's perfectly normal to not like tattoos - as I find them hideous as well. There's just something that irks me about them. Most people get idiotic designs and permanently plaster them onto their bodies for the whole world to see. Some others find designs that look really cool on paper but just look awful on skin. I never understood the appeal of a tattoo beyond wanting to be 'unique' and 'rebellious'. It's 2016 now. Getting a tattoo is neither unique nor rebellious. And don't even get me started on the morons who put tattoos on their faces (among other stupid spots on the body that they get tattoo'd). It's time for this fad to finally die.

People don't only get tattooed to be unique or rebellious, some get them because they follow a trend, others because of insecurity and it makes them feel more confident, there are so many reasons behind it. Tattoos are also used as cosmetic camouflage. People from different backgrounds get tattooed. I regret some of mine.

Tattoos can be (rarely) beautiful on a person's body. I know that they look hot on many muscular lean men. They also can look beautiful on a woman's body if they are not overdone and extreme. Putting tattoos all over one's arms, body, neck, etc. is not attractive and in fact makes a lot of people think of thugs and druggies. It's extremely difficult to erase them completely. Also people change throughout their lives. We are not permanent fixtures like a statue. Our bodies are always changing and so are our minds and our likes, dislikes, etc. Tattoos are permanent. There are a lot of people who regret different tattoos as they get older. I think some people get tattoos because they are so insecure that they want to be noticed and liked. It would be interesting to do an extensive poll to see what economic class of people get the most tattoos. Also it would be great to see how many people regret having tattoos when asked 10, 20 or 30 years down the road.

I personally wish they would just go away for the most part (not 100% but mostly) and that people would learn to express themselves in different ways such as jewelry, verbal communication, writing, dress, photographs, etc. Also tattoos can be unhealthy physically. I wonder if there are any stats about longevity of individuals with tattoos as opposed to those without them.

no it is not just you tattoos are ugly. The other day I saw a woman she had an open back dress with these awful sores, pustules Sacks..so grotesque all over her back.

Whoops then I realized they were tattoos. Standoff and look at tattoos they look like birth defects or just plain something is wrong.

Also believe it are not they are demonic. So be it that is my opinion for what it is worth.
generally they are an indicator of someone who has open sex and drinks does drugs and has a little respect for society. The trouble is there so many it's creepy I mean it's really creepy.

Yes I realize not all people with tattoos are bad,but get real with most people that have them you will find alcohol and drugs and sex not far behind. If you think this is good that's fine. But the most important word people forget these days is consequences. Is our world getting better? Consequences

Tattoos can be very appealing to the eye, but I'll never fully understand why people have them. My reasons for not having tattoos are beyond the petty ideology that they make a person less than. What I love is permanent in my mind and would never need to be permanent on my body. Because of this I feel like I can not truly connect with a person that has tattoos, but I won't kick them out of my life. I vote yes it is normal, but not for me.

  • Everybody is entitle to their own opinion. That being said, my opinion is that you are an extremely conservative and closed minded idiot. Tattoos have been around since before your exsistance and they WILL be around long after you are gone and forgotten. People love tattoos, on themselves and in general and you are unfortunately one of those sad people who's probably really young and too scared to get tattoos so you say things like "if you want to make yourself look like a piece of trailer trash, get a tattoo". Tattoos are for everyone, and the fact that you even use the word "geek" and consider it an actual analysis of a group of specific people, further comfirms your stupidity. You're aparantly a sexist too, because according to you tattoos are ugly "especially on girls". Women or men can have ugly, poorly done tattoos, and yes, those are ugly. Other people have amazing, colourful, pieces of art on their body for a life time and they laugh at people like you who think they're trashy or ugly.

I think tattoos are utterly repugnant. When I see people who are incredibly attractive plastering bulbous and meaningless monstrosities on their bodies it saddens me greatly.
The 'tramp stamp' as it has become affectionately known is almost always a worthless and vacuous piece of nothingness plastered onto someone's back or rear end. It can often be a massive Chinese symbol, a flower or an animal. Where this pertains a tangible meaning is anathema to me.
The other most common tattoo is a date or time, often to signify the death of a loved one. Whilst this type of tattoo obviously signifies some sort of meaning to the individual's life, I question the reason behind it. Why is it necessary for this significant event to be displayed publically, and occasionally provocatively, over something that I would personally consider a private affair. Whilst I understand that in some sections of our society this is normal behaviour now I just can't get my head around it. The date, time and memory will not gain or lose any significance with or without the tattoo. In some way I do feel that the act cheapens the life and memory of the person whom it sought to keep existential.
I have no grudge against people with tattoos but I do feel as though it ruins peoples otherwise pleasant appearances. I am further concerned that they are used as a way to gain attention for people who crave it, or need it, the result of this concludes with an ever abundant display of colourful motifs affixed to one's body.
I would never hate or dislike someone because they had tattoos but I must confess to considering them a barbaric stain on one's appearance from which the consequences are often ill thought of.

Yes (and sorry to get a somewhat graphic here) supposing you're about to get intimate with that person who has a date, another persons name or a drawing of an animal tattooed on them in a place you can't fail to see it with their clothes off, wouldn't that totally ruin the mood somewhat?

Also, the back tattoo (or buttocks) I find really hard to understand the point of. Nobody else (not even you unless you are looking in the mirror with another mirror behind you) can see it, what's the point of that?

I agree with you OP . I do not like them at all. Maybe one or 2t , but these people are freaks. They get them all over their body. Imagine wearing the same funky, loud clothes all the time. That is what these people are doing, when they get one tattoo after another. Glad I am secure about myself and I do not need attention that bad. By the way, I look away from many people with tattoos. I find them that disgusting and ugly. How would have thought, uglifying your body would be the in thing.

totally low class, especially the written ones. why would anyone want to be a t-shirt when it's cheaper and easier to read just by getting it on a t-shirt which can then be changed or just discarded when (and not if, but WHEN) you finally get sick of it?

All the people who have overdone it with the tattoos will likely regret it someday.

Too many can look horrible, especially if the person has loads but i like one or two on a girl. Especially if the place she has it isnt a common place to get it done, adds to their beauty in my opinion.

I stumbled across this site because I am going through a bad time, with my tattoos and other things too. This might be a long post but please don't judge me too much. I just wanted to put a different perspective on tattoos and why people get them etc. I have body dysmorphic disorder & this is my story about my tattoos and why I am now wanting them all gone.

My eating disorder started when I was 12, the cutting started at 14. I am very ugly so when I was chosen to be a model I didn't believe it. I stayed in the industry on and off for 4 years. I hated feeling like an object, I have social anxiety disorder and hated the attention, I just think people laugh at me behind my back, I am scared to be out in public & it has got worse over the years.

3 years ago in an attempt to change my attitude about myself and how people see me I covered myself in tattoos, I didn't want to be a sex object and I thought it would help me, plus it stopped me from cutting so often. My tattoos have deep meanings for me, they are not just random & I have some beautiful artwork, I actually draw all my own tattoos.

For over a year now its all changed. I feel even more ugly because of the tattoos so I try and loose more weight to counteract the feelings. I think I look like a whore, a skinny drug addict with a full sleeve of ink plus others. I am scared to go out in public because of the stares I get, I know people are laughing and saying how disgusting I look. Sometimes I want to just die. I am so ashamed I cannot tell a soul. For over a year I have had to pretend I love my tattoos. I can't even tell my therapist about it as I am so ashamed and feel so much hatred toward myself.

I don't know what to do? It is so much more than just the tattoos & there are many reasons why people get them. I love to see tattoos on other people, I really love art yet now I hate myself even more for my own artwork. I wanted people to see me for who I am with my tattoos as if a little bit of my soul was coming through my skin. Now I am even more broken than before & there is no way to fix it.

Thank you for reading this is the first time I have spoken about how I feel. Please don't judge me too harshly.

Hiya! It's been 5 years since you posted this comment so you may not even get a notification. I wonder if you are still regretting your tattoos and how you have been dealing with it?

I think tattoos are ugly too, especially lower back and foot tattoos. I would never get a tattoo, NEVER.

You are absolutely correct - they are ugly, and serve no purpose except that the people who have / get them think they look good.. Little do they fully realize that these are "proof positive" identification if anything illegal transpires.
Plus in later years when the so-called ink / stink startsd to fade, they look like total crap.
Obviously some people are only looking for attention by getting these idiotic things.

Tattoos are such wonderful artwork that a friend had them on his face, and then had them removed when he started a business. Tattoo removal is now a big business. Body mutilation labels you as a human baboon.

Dancer 81, how come I am not surprised that you can not even spell tattoo. You also misspell piercings. As far as a memorial; Wouldn't it make more sense to give to a relevant charity for your dearly departed. The tattoo is all about you. Lets be honest. The memorial was just an excuse. I find tattoo people to just spend their money on those things and not spend money on actually helping a relevant charity pertaining to their departed. It is hypocrisy for sure.
