The consumer's console, ps4!

It looks like Sony's doing it right this time around. I'm still skeptical, but the only real downside I've seen so far is having to pay to play online. Compared to all the bullshit with Microsoft's new console though, that doesn't seem like such a big issue really.

What are your thoughts on the newest systems coming out later this year? Are you excited? Which one will you be getting? By the way, anything other than PS4 (I might accept Nintendo...) is the WRONG answer :P

Yeah, I'm interested. 26
No, I'm not interested. 22

Bravo PS4 - the Xbox One won't be on my shopping list.

I really hate the idea of not being able to resell or share my games with friends without them "purchasing" the right to use a used disk.

AND for the console to be on a continuous connection to the internet even on solo play?

Fucking hell, has Microsoft been outside the United States? The internet speeds in New Zealand is shit and bloody expensive.

You can add up to 9 friends to a list of people who can play your games (so long as you're not playing them at the same time), they don't even need the disk.

I'm not necessarily getting and Xbox One, I'd just recommend that you check your facts before basing decisions on them.

I'm actually going back to PS1 games, imo that's one of the best features of PS3 that it plays and saves PS1 games, I dont really have an interest in these new game systems, it seems like they keep getting worse, or maybe im just one of those "stuck in the past" retro gamers but i don't really like all these serious games, not that I mind violence, it just seems like they don't have much story anymore... It's like in the old days since the graphics where shit they had to make up for it with good story/characters, now they can get by with having awesome graphics and mindless violence

I don't agree with you about the stories. I'd say many of the latest generation of games (from the last 5 or so years) have been really focused on story and characterisation. It seems to be all about making the games as cinematic as possible now, sometimes to the detriment of the gaming experience, other times elevating the game to a new level of artistic expression.

The money that can be made in the industry now means you can attract great voice actors, invest in sublime graphics and downloadable content, and make playing a game not simply about getting to the last boss level, but about delving into an expansive fictional universe with a rich history, multifaceted characters and layers of non-linear story.

See: GTA, Far Cry, Bioshock, Deus Ex, LA Noire, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed, Portal, F.E.A.R, Skyrim, Halo.

Honestly, can't you remember a time when virtually the only games with decent stories were Japanese RPGs? The balance has definitely adjusted in the right direction, imo. Perhaps you're playing the wrong games :P

I can agree with you in a way. While I keep up with current games, side scrolling games are almost none existent as well as shoot em ups. Games that ARE considered shooters are the rinse and repeated FPS types that consist of holding L1 and R1 or LB and RB together to aim and shoot instead of the insane bullet dodging of older games. Don't give up hope though! If you want side scrolling, Muramasa the Demon Blade, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Bastion and Mighty Switch Force 1 & 2 are great. Mushihimesama Futari, Ikaruga and Sine Mora for bullet hells. Sorry if you knew these already, just thought I'd point out some good mostly recently games.

As for this story, I'm interested in the PS4 but I'm also looking at some Wii U games as well. I won't count Nintendo out of this one.

Sony really impressed me this time around; they're the company that's actually listening to its consumers. I checked ScoreHero for all the conundrums involved with the Xbox One (the guys in that community love to check every nook and cranny of an electronic), and their insight helped me reach a conclusion. Let me just say that I won't be buying another Microsoft product for a long time, granted that my 360 doesn't get the RROD. My Turtle Beaches aren't even compatible with the new plug-in! Ugh. Capitalism is dirty business.

I'll eventually buy a PS4. Sure I can still play on my 360, but I'm being milked for my hard-earned money just for buying LIVE. For now, investing in a new PS2 controller to play my older games for nostalgia isn't such a bad idea.

  • I think the Xbox one has too many negatives for it, however my gaming buddy is hellbent on getting it over the PS4, and I have no idea why, in which I only use consoles to play online with my gaming buddy, so I guess I'm getting Xbox One now, too.

I need a gaming buddy for the new Destiny game coming out, so Xbox One it is, sadly.

I'm really stoked with what the Playstation 4 offers. Sure it's a downer to pay to play online, but I used to buy Playstation Plus anyways on the PS3. The only thing I'm worried about is the backwards compatibility for PS3 games?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Yeah, that is a good one. I'm almost certain it will not have backwards compatibility, which sucks...

Nintendo has always been really good about staying true by supporting backwards compatibility on their systems.

I might get a PS4, but I almost certainly won't be getting an Xbox One. To be honest I have a PS3 and I'm happy with it, so until they stop manufacturing new games for the current generation (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) I probably won't bother with new generation consoles. I'll wait for the price to go down a bit, then maybe buy a PS4.

I have quite a bit more loyalty to Sony than Microsoft when it comes to consoles, because Microsoft tend to want to cash in on services Sony provides without extra charge (with the Xbox 360 it was Xbox Live, with the Xbox One it's going to be a charge for using secondhand discs).

The only thing that would make me want the Xbox One was if I cared very much about all the voice integration stuff, but I really don't. The whole point of the One is putting lots of different functions in one device, but my innate preference is for having different devices for different functions. In that sense the One doesn't appeal to me at all.

I'm probably going to get an Xbox One. Microsoft seems to be more on the cutting edge than Sony who usually just plays follow the leader. I own both a PS3 and an Xbox right now, and I'm much happier with the way Xbox has developed their platform over the life of the system rather than Playstation. It's easy to forget how many things Microsoft invented to put on Live and then Sony just ripped off to put on PSN.

The DRM stuff doesn't bother me a whole lot because I'm not one to buy and sell a ton of games. And I'm sure MS is listening anyway to the complaints and something is sure to happen before launch.

I've seen a lot of things from Xbox one to really get excited about, but no so much from the PS4. I mean its a little short sighted to base this decision entirely off of a $100 price difference and speculative marketplace issues. I'm in it for the games.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • No, it's not being speculative.

Firstly, Xbox live was better (and more innovative I suppose) than Playstation network. That's probably because Sony did it for free though, while Xbox required a membership subscription.

Secondly, this is what gamers want, and Sony is listening.

      -True consumer ownership.
-We don't want restrictions on used games.
-We don't want a mandatory internet connection to play our games offline because they have to be authenticated on a regular basis.

The $100 Price difference is just a bonus. A big fat Benjamin Franklin of a bonus. I don't know about you, but I like Ben. I'm real good friends with Ben and he stays in MY wallet if at all possible.

Sony is marketing to consumers and developers, and Microsoft is marketing to publishers and corporate types.

I don't foresee Microsoft making a huge comeback from this downfall.

The systems aren't going to be released for months, of course everything is speculative.

It's kind of absurd to call it a "downfall" when all we have are press releases and sales pitches. For all we know, the PS4 could be a piece of crap out of the box.

Right now, the arguments I'm hearing for buying PS4 are:

        It doesn't have DRM.
        It's $100 cheaper.
        It's not Xbox.
The lolz internet jokes about Xbox DRM are cool lolz.

Where are the good exclusive games? Where are the groundbreaking features?

You're forgetting Sony allows indie developers to self-publish, which is obviously not as beneficial to them but they do it to allow the companies to grow at a faster rate due to no big publisher intervention. Good exclusive games? Honestly? I can rifle off a few from the top of my head. Infamous: Second Son, DriveClub, The Order, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Don't Starve...

Hahaha, "groundbreaking features?" So which groundbreaking features does Xbone have that PS4 doesn't, despite the screwed up kinect all-seeing all-hearing shit? You know that Xbone may be illegal in Germany and possibly Australia if they view it as violation of data protection?

Edit: Not to mention - MS live in a giant bubble. They don't realise concerns for less fortunate countries. At Xbone's launch, the servers will only be available to 22 countries.

I'm definitely going to get the PS4. I was already sold on it before I even found out the Kingdom Hearts 3 was going to come out on the system. I don't agree with Microshit's policies. I think the xboxone (nonsensical name, btw) is creepy in how it monitors you and basically enslaves you. Its technology like that that makes me think about AI's becoming so artificially independent/advance that they form a mutiny against us humans. (The Matrix comes to mind.) I can't fathom why anyone would still consider by this "system".

I also wouldn't mind getting the wii u at some point, at least when they have a better variety of games. It would be a shame if Nintendo went bankrupt because of this system and their lack of new franchises, etc.

On another note, I really want to see Sega return to the Console business.

First off - "...real downside I've seen so far is having to pay to play online" - I'd like to point out that as wrong. To play online, you must be a PS+ member, & if you have a look on the PS Store right now & browse through all PS+ discounted/free games, you'll realise that you're getting an astounding deal.

Here are a list of some of the FREE games (not even the discounted or featured ones) - http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1dlqok/what_does_one_full_year_50_of_playstation_plus/

Moving on, I'm entirely stoked for next-generation gaming. I'm a huge fan, & I've spent lots of time over the last few days watching & re-watching all of the E3 announcements (which totally screwed my sleep routine but was worth it!). Sony's press conference was incredible, but also the main publisher's conferences were very well done & I saw a tonne of content coming that blew me away. To name some - Destiny, The Division & The Order.

This year, I'm glad to say Sony has taken the award for best console to me. I'm especially happy because I don't particularly like Microsoft. :P It's a definite PS4 for me, & I'm hoping to see a lot of Xbox users switch over... Except the COD players, MS can keep them. :P

Hopefully my input isn't too late to get noticed, & apologies for any typos. :)
