The concept of police is great. The practice, not so great. Why? People with power will abuse it.

Police suck! I say this and I am white. Once when I was 16 someone tried to drag me through the woods to kidnap or violate me. I got away and one cop acted like it was my fault. He also got the description of his clothes wrong that he radio'd out to other cops.

Then someone was trying to break into my house and I called 911 it took the police over 1hour to get there and the police station was only 3 minutes away.

However when my tag was 1 day over the expiration the jerks were right on me as I was driving to the gas station to get it inspected.

Mostly all the cops do in my area is give out speeding tickets I think they are losers in taking care of real crime.

If you search on Police Brutality, you will find thousands of stories of abuse of authority.

They did an experiment in Berkley where they made half the participants jail guards, and the other half prisoners, just to see how they would turn out. They had to end the experiment early because it got way out of hand. The jailguards way over-stepped their bounds. It's typical when "the good ol' boys" are given unlimited power.

Without the police, we would be in a state of anarchy. Anarchy is a chaotic and confusing absence of any form of authority or government. We are a democracy, and therefore we are a government. Governments have laws. Laws have little meaning unless they are enforced. Therefore, we have Law Enforcement. If some of them are a**holes, it doesn't change their fundamental role in the preservation of our society as we know it.

Okay I get to ACTUALLY straddle the fence here. I have a friend who is a police officer. He is respectful, professional, and kind when treated that way and curt, professional, and strong when disrespected. I would trust him with my life and feel safer knowing people like him are on the force. He is not an officer to try and beat his way to glory, he's there to serve and protect.

On the other hand, I've met the shitty cops. I was dropped off at a friends house while my bf took his friend grocery shopping. Stupidly, I stayed there when another friend showed up and wanted to be an ass. Cops showed up and held us all. I was immediately treated better because I was white and female, despite all of us being respectful. My boyfriend came back, and seeing the commotion, came to see what was going on. An officer told him to stay on the sidewalk and he did. Eventually he simply said 'please officer, she's shaking she's so scared, she's never been in trouble, please let her go home. The officer spun and walked towards him, yelling at him to leave. So he started down the street. Police officer actually fucking spit on him as he was walking. Loogy not spittle. Boyfriend brushed it off his shoulder and when he did that same officer rushed him, sprayed mace in his face and conveniently down the entire arm he spit on, and threw my bf in the street. After handcuffing him and leaving him in the street with a police dog snapping in front of him, he comes back to ms, smiles real big, and tells me I'm free to go. At court he lied and said my bf crossed the lawn and got in his face, cussing at him and shoving him. This is the officer that makes us all leery, makes people fear police because you can't tell until you're in the middle which kind of guy they are.

But we cannot get rid of police over the idiots we can only work to weed them out as best we can, so good, strong, honest men like my friend can continue to protect us.

i know how you feel and hate the police in america..... i know it too because i see it in the television how they hurt people *HARD... and even if the person surrendered they will still beat him up... also they beat you up hard for just very small wrong.....

if you want to have a society of proper policemen/policewomen you should ask danish people in denmark... we have police here in denmark and they're really nice.... if you do something wrong they talk about it with you... but if your armed and dangerous thats another story.......

Although your comments are generalist and hateful, I have a healthy fear/distrust for the police. Many I have come across or met personal are power-hungry egotists unwilling to have an intelligent exchange of ideas. wow whats with all this idealistic black and white logic it seems so prevailant these days. first cops are human and in being human have all the strengths and weakness of all of us. cops are not evil because they are cops. bad or evil people are that way not because they are a part of some group. usually those people were that way to begin with, and then use certain jobs or organizations to obtain power so they can influence and coherce others into the same evil behaviors and ideals. best way to fight back is not to hate cops but to encourage good, fair and temperate people to seek out these jobs and use their power to influence others to be good. where there is corruption there are corrupt people, where there is justice there are just people. dont be angry or hostile. be motivated. do all you can to get the right people into the right positions of power. while i feel all people should be held accountable for their actions there are often times where they are not. you cant change that. what you can do is always hold yourself accountable and show people through your actions and way of life that there is a better way. i am sorry if you have felt taken advantage of and treated unfairly i suggest you reexamine yourself and the way you dealt with and acted in the situations you felt were unfair, maybe you can see how your behaviour also influenced your situation and try a different approach next time. i truely believe that evil doesnt exist on its own, but must be allowed to exist by the good being fearful or apathetic. be strong in your convictions hold your head high live a life to which you hold yourself accountable for and be a power for change and good. even if you never change the police or court system you at least will know you tried and lived a life you can be proud of.

It's very easy to tell how smart a cop is just by looking at his uniform:
Three stripes means he can read AND write.
Two stripes means he can read OR write.
One stripe means he KNOWS someone who can read or write.

really if you think about it, the police are just a city or county gang. I have been harrased by the police, and even shot at. I was at the wrong place, at the wrong time. I watched them sealing drugs, and when thay saw me, thay shot at me, almost killed me. so yeah I know how you feel. but I belive like anyone, there are good people and bad people. good cops and bad cops. and yes you hardly will ever hear of the good cops, the news and tv is real big on saying all the bad stuff about people. thats just how life is I guess.

I think it depends on the police officer. My uncle is a police office and he's a really good police officer. Then my cousins husband is a cop and he's the type of cop that pulls someone over after the speed just drops from 70 to 50 and they're going 55.

My stepdad was a cop (more of a detective really) and he had to chase murderers across the country and put them to justice. Yeah, he's a REAL bad man, yeah right. Also, some people have said that life without laws would be better because then we could do what ever we want to, WRONG!!!! They were pretty much saying that if you're in the mood for sex go out to the street and rape as many people as you want, or going, hey, I don't like this person, I think I'm gonna kill them today. We NEED laws and police to maintain order in a world with cruel people with no morals! Human nature is a mystery for me: when I read and hear about corrupt male/female people in all walks of life especially in those we trust to keep law and order in the society we live in: For my own sanity and peace of mind I percent it in the overall good and decent people in what every walk: The small percent who are corrupt out of controll is minimum and 90% are very honest and upright people, family ways, those in education: I my case when I hear about thosed who abused children in institutions the percent was small even one is too many to have done it: But 90% percent of the others who educated me were exxcellent human beings loving respecting valueing of their duties towards all the children and students in the Boarding school: there is out of controll in the younger generation in todays world and society no matter where one lives: we do need law and order and the majority carry out their duties in such a manner that we all feel safer in our homes and when we walk the roads and streets on our life's journey: I do.

What ever their position (police officers, cps, judges etc) they are all people given power over others. People can be corrupted but most are good, we never hear too much about the good the justice systems do because it's expected to do so. We only hear about the failings and injustices because its more interesting.

I live really close to both a police station and a kaiser hospital. The distance between the to is about the same as walking from one side of a mall parking lot to the other and I live right between. One night I was up late reading a book and I hear someone outside my window talking about how to break into my house. I called the cops and told them. They said a unit just pulled into the station and was on the way. I hid in the my closet and grabbed my shotgun. I was listening as the guy popped the lock on the sliding door and came in. I had my phone and I kept checking the time. An hour and a half went by and I could hear him on the other side of the house going through stuff. I called the station again and whispering asked when the cop would be here because the guy was in my house and if he came in my room id kill him. The operated said any minute. I could hear him taking stuff out and coming in for more. 45 minutes later he made it to my room and that's when I popped out and shot him. I called the station and told them I killed the guy who broke in and what do you know a cop shows up 30 seconds later and says I'm under arrest for manslaughter. Spent three days in jail wih no bail before being released. Sued them and got 2.4 million out of it.

I would nominate Scientology. While I have met some former real down and outers who probably would have died of a drug overdose out behind a dumpster but were rescued by Scientology, they have also done a lot of damage and ruined many lives.

My dads a cop and when I was little me and my sister would joke around about how our dad could get out of a ticket if he did somethin bad.he used to always say that he would get the. Same punish?ent as anyone else. But one day he was going 60mph when the speed limit was 45mph and he got pulled over.when the cop that pulled him over realized my dad was sergeant detective he just laughed and walked back to his car.

There are certainly police officers who abuse their power. But seriously, because of police officers, child molesters and murderers are taken off the streets. Abused people are rescued.
I do think police officers should stop sitting on their asses on the highway waiting to pull someone over for going 2 miles over the speed limit. There are actual REAL crimes to prevent, FFS!

1) You are missing an extremely important point entirely. Police have no interest in stopping crime because they would be putting themselves out of business.
2) Take the moral high road. Obey the law to the point where you do not feel restricted by it. Be in the majority or sizeable minority of public opinion. Challenge the law where necessary.
3)Take the moral low road. Do your research. Find out who the worst, most corrupt cops are and use the baseball bat approach (above). THIS IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE THEY WILL UNDERSTAND!
4)Reform the system. Policing duties are usually handled by a quasi-military body that is inherently susceptable to corruption. A bottom-up, elected body like the Sheriff is more fair and just.
5)Vote. Elect INDEPENDENT candidates who will reform the criminal-justice system to reflect actual public opinion.

Police are NOT necessary. The very idea that people think adults need other adults to tell them that they can/can't do this, that & the other boggles my mind. What's worse is we've not only allowed law enforcement to tell us what is acceptable, we've allowed it to actually ENFORCE its ideas of acceptance. On top of all that, requirements & standards for becoming an officer of the law have been getting lower & lower. If some of today's generation are tomorrow's law enforcement, please... Cops are GREAT!!! Especially how they always seem to be around to catch you goin a little over the speed limit but can never be found when someone is getting beat, robbed or raped. Wow great job cops! I felt so safe when my ex was beating me in the car while I was driving...not one cop in the road seemed to notice but the next day they sure noticed when I had a cracked windshield. Damn! The truth is : justice system or not the result is the same. But now i think the world needs a bit of anarchy. Because the justice system has some flaws. And he can't do anything about it. True story.

They have been given power to controll the masses through fear. The police are only out to protect the wealthy, So if you drive a new car or you live in a nice house in a upscale housing development. chances are you will not be looked over by the police or other law inforcement. My mums an Inspector so i'm biased but I think on the whole they are doing the best they can and that without some sort of law enforcement countries would probably break down. However, I appreciate there is corruption in the system, as there is with most, and that you get rogue cops who feel that they are above the law and use it to punish as they see fit.

I can't imagine a world without Police. If you got terrorized by them if is possibly because you were afraid of them in the first place. People fear clowns too, some even fear oranges, that doesn't make them evil. If you are afraid, don't be afraid of anything, that steals the object of fear all its strength.

If people were responsible enough as to not go around killing others, stealing, beating and all the rest, then police would have no need to exist.

Personally I thank police for making me feel a bit safer whenever a police car goes by. Its like the sound of the siren is saying "You're not alone on the streets". It makes you feel safe and unsafe at the same time. Safer when you are innocent, unsafe when you are a criminal.

Normally I like the police, some do their job really well. Other times, they just test our patience, our standing or whatever and that little test makes us want to rebel against authority even more, even if we're fine with authority. For example, my friend and I, who are both adults go out walking at night in a quiet neighborhood and a police car stops at the corner and waits until we pass by to get a REALLY close look at us. Then we walk by, the police car circles the block again and this time shines a bright light onto our backs, and continues to shine a light down the street. I mean we're both adults. It's just more annoying to deal with untrusting authority than it is to deal with authority in general.

Months ago, a cop gave me a parking ticket. Today, I went to court to contest it. I pled not guilty, and being the only party to show up at court (probably because I was the only party summoned), I was found not guilty by default. The moral of the story is that our legal system is very imperfect, but it still works for the people as much as it does against them.

This is semi-off topic but through reading much of the posts on this question I have found that a lot o people think that everything about cops or the government is black and white( and I'm not talking about race as many of you seem to persist on talking about). When really you don't understand how it really would be with out cops or any other defence agency in America. Think about this with out some sort of order people would pillage and destroy everything we work hard to build, you would have to fight for what you have and defend it sometimes with your life. You would have to guard you home and property twenty four seven from people who are indire straights and can't afford their own supplies or you could be the one who has to find your supplies through ravaging peoples houses. Stores would be able to charge what ever they want for supplies and pay you as little as they wanted. Through the anarchy there would imerge a dictatorship or one person owning almost everything or the country, no matter what country, would be taken over through the state of chaos created by anarchy and they would be back to exactly what many of you are complaining about. So yes many of the cops in the united states may be power hungry and currupt but the at the same time most of you could not survive in a world without them. They can be a pain in the ass alot of the time but with out them it would become survival of the fittest or in other words natural selection and many of you would not survive. You would be in a constant fight for your life in a society without structure or in out words government and or police or other law inforcement agencies( that will be another point in a few sentences) and I know that most would not survive heck I don't know if I would.

To the point of other government law enforcement agencies there are agencies that are more powerfull than the police. For example the FBI doesn't need probable cause they can hold you just by saying that you are a terriorist or a threat and can keep as long as they need to find out anything and everything about you. So what I am trying to say is the police are not all powerful as many of you seem to believe.

One final point if you can't tell from the rest of my message I am for
police, I don't have any relative that are police officers or any friends, but they risk their lives for people they don't know. Could you do the same for some one you don't know or care about?

The judge doesn't decide your fate the jury does. The judge sentences you. Both of my parets are police officers and while I will admit there are some crooked cops, most arnt. When a police officer comes to your aid after you've been in a wreck, or your laying on the floor in the middle of a bank robbery, maybe you'll realize how fortunate you are to have someone willing to die for you.

I love cops, they keep psychopaths from mugging and attacking me. I hope they catch and lock away all the psychopath criminals running around in the streets. They also rescue people in emergencies like during 9-11 they ran into the towers to rescue people when everyone was getting the hell out and many of them died. Yes there are some obnoxious individual ones, but in those cases I take their badge numbers and make a report to 311 about the specific incident and ask for a follow up meeting. Most however are nice to me, I've even called them because some "stupid wanna be thug kids" annoyed me on the street, they arrived in about a minute and cleared the morons off the street. Police are a necessary part of society. They hold the force that society must have in order to stave off chaos. However, there are rules and limits to what the police can do. If you have been legitimately wronged take it to the higher authorities, seek redress, file suit, organize protests (legal ones). It is wrong to use extreme measures when you are not yet faced with extreme evil.

While I will agree that there are some corrupt folks working in government, I would say that the police are actually the least corrupt. Judges have a lot more power and know it. They seem to be on the higher rung of the corruption ladder. There are other governmental agencies that are far far FAR more evil than any law enforcement agencies. Social services is one them. You know, the people that kidnap your children and basically hold them for ransom until you make them a load of $$$ via their services? Yeah...more corrupt indeed. Police are civilian grunt soldiers that provide public safety and perform various tasks in the community to insure your city, county, and state are habitable. They risk their lives and put themselves in situations that would make you shit your pants for very little pay. Without them, the country would be in total chaos.
