To begin with, the media should stop romanticizing mass-shooters, because this is what the shooters themselves want. They do it because they want to be known.

If I was the police chief id put him in pink underwear and make him walk around the street all day or something humilating idk. Have you noticed the difference in press coverage between the guy who killed 6 and injured 62 others when he drove thru the Christmas parade vs this latest asshole who shot & killed 7 and injured 30?
If you use an SUV you don't get the press coverage. The easiest way to get famous in America is pick up a gun and shoot people. The media won't talk about suicides much because they know it will inspire copycats. They ignore that rule when it comes to mass shootings.

I don't think I would mind if they just killed these guys, either, but there's a thin line between giving criminals what they deserve and complete barbarism. Kill one guy without due process, might as well kill the rest, too.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think the problem lies with the media coverage. I'm not convinced nearly any of these guys did it for the fame, they just had a camera or announced their crap on 4Chan and we point to that as the whole reason they shot dozens of people.
No, the reason they shot dozens of people is because they had access to a gun and they were completely deranged. None of them had great lives before they committed mass murder. Tighten and actually enforce gun laws, improve security and law enforcement in public places, and find new ways to reach out to people who show or see clear warning signs.
The people who commit these atrocities should ideally be diagnosed, and locked up in psychiatric wards before this stuff happens. There's a serious mental health crisis at hand!

I do wish the media wouldn't sensationalize them like they do, though. The Columbine kids spoke in their home videos about how they were going to become famous and be talked about in the media, as well as have a movie made about them. They got their wish, as they've been talked about a lot in the media for years (and have/had a cult following on Tumblr, unfortunately) and there are now several books and films based on that shooting. People also love sharing the shooters' photos all over social media.
